Ellen DeGeneres lands big Hollywood comeback role six years after being ‘canceled’ over bullying accusations

Ellen DeGeneres is expected to return to Hollywood after stepping away following accusations of creating a hostile work environment.

The comedian, age 68, is returning to voice the popular character Dory in another movie from Disney’s hugely successful ‘Finding Nemo’ series.

According to Deadline, DeGeneres will voice Dory in an upcoming short film. 

DeGeneres previously voiced Dory in 2003’s Finding Nemo and then again in 2016’s Finding Dory.

The 2016 sequel earned over $1 billion in theaters, becoming one of the most successful animated movies ever made.

This marked Ellen DeGeneres’ last movie appearance, though she continued to be on TV until about 2021. Around that time, her reputation suffered after accusations of bullying and mistreatment surfaced.

I remember when everything started to change for Ellen. It all began with a simple tweet back in March 2020 from Kevin T. Porter – he just asked people to share any crazy stories they’d heard about her being unkind. Honestly, the replies flooded in – thousands of people responded with their experiences, and that’s when the whole scandal really took off.

Four months after the initial reports, BuzzFeed News released a detailed article with accounts from eleven people—one current and ten former employees—who worked on the daytime talk show hosted by the Louisiana native. They described experiences with racism, bullying, and sexual harassment on set.

By August 2020, WarnerMedia began looking into complaints about the show, leading to the firing of executive producers Ed Glavin, Kevin Leman, and Jonathan Norman. Ellen DeGeneres also publicly apologized to her 255 staff members.

After 19 seasons, Ellen DeGeneres hosted her last episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show on May 26, 2022, and apologized to viewers during the broadcast.

She later branded the backlash ‘a coordinated misogynistic’ attack on her. 

Looking back on 2022, she shared with The Hollywood Reporter that she believes even though it was a really tough time, something good must have come from it, and she’s trying to trust that happened for a reason.

I gained a lot of valuable insights, and I was really surprised by some of the things I discovered. It was a revealing experience, and I believe it all happened for a reason.

After a long break from performing, Ellen DeGeneres returned to the screen with her 2024 Netflix special, ‘Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval’.

When the project was released, critics didn’t react well, giving it mostly negative reviews and a 33% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Last year, the Daily Mail published shocking claims from a former employee about what it was like working on Ellen DeGeneres’ now-cancelled talk show.

Employees at Ellen DeGeneres’ show reportedly lived in fear, and some allegedly made fun of her by playing a prank meant to imitate what they saw as her immature actions.

After Donald Trump won the 2024 election, Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, left the United States and went to the UK.

She discussed her reasons for moving in a conversation with English broadcaster Richard Bacon last year at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham.

Ellen DeGeneres mentioned that she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, were thinking about renewing their vows in the UK, especially after recent efforts in the US to roll back the legal rights of same-sex couples to marry.

We arrived the day before the election and woke up to a flood of texts from our friends – everyone was sending crying emojis. That’s when I realized he’d won. And we decided right then and there that we weren’t going anywhere.

I’m completely captivated by the UK! It’s just breathtakingly beautiful – honestly, nothing like I’ve ever experienced before. She went on to say how much she liked it, noting that it was clean and everything seemed improved – especially how the animals were cared for, and how friendly everyone was. She simply loved the place.

We relocated here in November, which wasn’t the best timing, but I finally got to experience snow for the first time! We’re really enjoying it here. Portia brought her horses with her, I’m raising chickens, and we even had sheep for a short while – about two weeks.

It appears she’s had a change of heart, recently spending $27.4 million on a home in Montecito, California, late last year.

She and de Rossi are currently dividing their time between England and the famous community of Montecito, where celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Ariana Grande also live.
