Why Matthew’s absence on Call the Midwife has been good for Trixie
Call the Midwife season 14, episode 2 spoilers below.
In this week’s episode of Call the Midwife, we had the reappearance of Olly Rix’s character Matthew, but instead, he made an appearance through a letter. (It seems that Call the Midwife is focusing on married correspondence this season.)
Trixie received a letter from her long-distance sweetheart containing a strand of her stepson Jonty’s hair. This touched her deeply following the exhaustion of a challenging case.
Due to mental illness, Arlene (Abigail Hood) had to temporarily part ways with her child in the situation at hand, although our hope is that it remains a temporary separation.
In a perfectly timed manner, Matthew’s words stirred in Trixie a deep yearning to be with her family. Despite our eagerness for them to be together again, their time apart has significantly contributed to Trixie’s personal growth.
In fact it’s birthed a Trixie who we’ve never seen before, at least not wholly.
Despite being portrayed as a dedicated and lively midwife with a zest for life, Trixie had a shadowy side due to the hardships of her turbulent childhood.
Or:
Though she was often depicted as a cheerful and diligent midwife, there was a hidden, somber aspect to Trixie that stemmed from her challenging upbringing.
In the early stages of “Call the Midwife,” the character Trixie grappled with alcohol addiction. Her journey towards sobriety, marked by ups and downs, was a significant aspect of the series. Interspersed within these highs and lows was a complex love life for Trixie, which unfortunately led to more than a fair share of painful heartaches.
These narratives have developed a character, Trixie, with a complex and vibrant personality that shines in both dark and light moments. However, it must be acknowledged that separating Trixie from her search for meaningful love (her godmother’s matchmaking agency played a significant role here) or her trials is challenging.
As I finally managed to win his heart, my journey towards personal development and professional advancement often felt overshadowed by the specter of romance and the potential impact on my relationship.
During the last season, as she excelled while Matthew struggled unnoticed, the focus for the audience shifted towards the anxiety about her potentially losing the affection and the lifestyle she had painstakingly built up.
As the underlying issues in Matthew’s life came to light, their arguments intensified, creating tension within their marriage. Over time, as they drifted further apart, Trixie found herself battling bouts of sadness which affected her performance as a dedicated midwife.
The buzz about Rix potentially leaving the ‘Call the Midwife’ family stirred similar apprehension among fans: “Could Matthew and Trixie be parting ways?” and “What will become of her without him?
Turns out, everything’s going great for her. In truth, she’s not just surviving but flourishing. The latest instance of a laboring mother serves as a testament to her significant progress from the disorganized state in season 13. Her enthusiasm for midwifery is now rekindled and burning brighter than ever.
Arlene and Trixie’s inability to assist a mentally unwell pregnant woman due to limited resources has ignited Arlene’s passion to champion the cause of vulnerable expectant mothers facing similar struggles with mental health issues.
More central to Trixie’s season 14 story arc will be her actions against the board of health.
Among the most experienced midwives, Trixie has been recruited by Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) for a mission aimed at challenging the board of health, who are attempting to impose significant alterations in the methods of nursing and midwifery at Nonnatus House.
Each of these elements contributes significantly to Trixie’s overall being (as hinted at during the Christmas special), and they are helping to mold her into a more multidimensional and captivating personality.
In a surprising twist, this new iteration of Trixie exhibits traits we haven’t witnessed before. She’s stronger than ever, more assured, and radiates an unprecedented level of confidence.
As a gamer, I’m not suggesting that Matthew diminished Rix or that we shouldn’t see her again (please make a comeback, Rix!). In fact, it seems plausible that her marriage – one that satisfies her romantically while still accommodating her needs – regaining its strength is a key factor in why she’s flourishing.
It’s also fantastic and exciting to see what Call The Midwife is doing with her in his absence.
Rather than focusing on Trixie’s longing and sorrow about her relationship or using their separation as the main theme for her character arc this season, showrunner Heidi Thomas is instead working to deepen Trixie’s complexity, making her more vibrant and multi-dimensional, much like the woman who danced in the Nonnatus kitchen, singing Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘Embraceable You’ with a wooden spoon.
Should you find yourself yearning for a touch of romance within Nonnatus, don’t forget about Cyril (Zephryn Taitte) and Rosalind (Natalie Quarry). Their relationship appears to be complex and filled with emotional ups and downs, but the recent peck on the cheek hints at further developments between them.
Call the Midwife airs weekly on BBC One on Sundays at 8pm and streams on BBC iPlayer.
