Austria’s hosting at Eurovision 2026 left a lot to be desired but they tried

Austria’s hosting of this year’s Eurovision contest has been widely criticized, and many viewers feel it hasn’t gone well. The hosts, while likely well-intentioned, haven’t resonated with the audience, and overall, the event has fallen short of expectations.

Victoria Swarovski appears well-groomed and attractive, but doesn’t really stand out. Her co-host, Michael Ostrowski, hasn’t been performing well, and his jokes aren’t landing with the audience.

Their performance as Eurovision hosts was widely criticized, even earning a jab from Graham Norton, who joked that viewers might get tired of seeing them on screen, according to Metro.

Honestly, a lot of us watching felt like the hosts just didn’t click, even though they were clearly trying their best. I saw someone on X put it perfectly: that interval act was amazing… it was the only thing saving the show from the hosts! I feel bad saying it, because Austria seemed to be putting in a lot of effort, but those two just didn’t seem to work together.

Someone else reacted with frustration, saying, “Oh no, here they go again with the Austria/Australia mix-up… please, let’s not go there again.”

The hosts of the Eurovision Song Contest really make a difference. In 2023, the UK hosted for Ukraine, and Hannah Waddingham captivated audiences with her personality. Sweden often hosts, and Petra Mede is a frequent and popular choice, making her a seasoned Eurovision host.

The semi-finals also went on for too long. With just 15 performers, the shows didn’t need to be over two hours. I’m a big Eurovision fan, but even I found myself getting bored and wishing they’d finish up.

Austria’s Eurovision interval acts haven’t been very successful. The quiz they presented on Tuesday was boring and felt low-budget, simply used to fill time. Surprisingly, they repeated a similar act on Thursday, which was a strange choice.

The only part of the show worth watching was the performance by past contestants, but even that wasn’t particularly great, especially considering it was meant to celebrate the contest’s 70th anniversary.

Many viewers expressed disappointment with Austria’s hosting of Eurovision. One person on X hoped Austria would reflect on its performance, while another stated that Austria should never host the event again.

Although some people didn’t like it, many others praised it, calling it “amazing.” One person specifically loved the music, saying: “This is exactly the kind of music I enjoy! The upbeat and cheerful songs are perfect in German. Excellent work!”

I thought Austria really nailed it when they hosted Eurovision in 2015 – it was a fantastic show, and having Conchita Wurst there definitely added some extra magic. But honestly, this year just hasn’t been hitting the same way.

Hopefully, next year’s host country can learn from Austria’s mistakes.
