The worst movie of the year has finally arrived on streaming

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for both movies and the occasional musical, I found myself eagerly anticipating the release of “Joker: Folie à Deux”. Having been captivated by the enigmatic character portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix in the first installment, I was intrigued by the idea of delving deeper into his psyche through a musical lens. However, the buzz surrounding this sequel had been less than promising, and as someone who’s learned to weather the storms of Hollywood, I braced myself for the worst.

Going to the movies is no exception when it comes to being subjected to critique. At times, everything falls perfectly into place, resulting in a magical experience that resonates deeply with global viewers. On other occasions, however, these cinematic endeavors might miss the mark, turning off audiences or failing to draw crowds at the theater (and occasionally both).

2022 has been a year full of both hits and misses in the world of cinema. Blockbusters like Deadpool and Wolverine, Inside Out 2, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Wicked, Moana 2, and Gladiator II have left audiences worldwide exhilarated and contributed significantly to the box office earnings. On the flip side, movies such as Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter haven’t fared as well, receiving unfavorable reviews from both fans and critics, and falling short of generating the necessary buzz to thrive at the box office.

Initially, there was a film that appeared poised to conquer the globe with a crescendo of anticipation surrounding its release. However, this hype failed to translate into ticket sales and instead ignited a chorus of criticism about the quality of the movie itself.

Joker: Folie à Deux is now available to stream on Max

The movie “Joker: Folie à Deux” has now become available on WarnerMedia’s streaming service Max (previously HBO Max), premiering on December 13. Since then, it has garnered attention from viewers who missed its theater release, with many watching it for the first time during its debut weekend. The response, as anticipated, has been quite similar to expectations.

The movie has gained notoriety as the year’s most infamous production, largely due to its dismal box office earnings, which labeled it one of the biggest box office flops. Earning only $206 million against an estimated budget of $190 – $200 million, it needed to make approximately $400 million to cover its costs. Even if it had managed that, it would have still fallen short by over half a billion dollars compared to its predecessor. Regrettably, it failed to achieve this, and Warner Bros. was left without the anticipated success.

The 2019 movie “Joker” was a title that sparked much debate, yet maintained a robust critical standing, even garnering some Academy Awards, and ultimately surpassing $1 billion in box office earnings. Contrastingly, its sequel failed to achieve any of these feats. Initially, there was considerable anticipation for the second film, accompanied by optimistic whispers preceding its debut, and the highly-anticipated casting of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. However, just prior to the movie’s widespread release, a shift occurred. People prepared themselves for the impending criticism. And boy, did it arrive.

Although Todd Phillips resumed directing, Joaquin Phoenix reprising his role as Arthur Fleck, and the presence of Lady Gaga, the movie Joker: Folie à Deux was generally panned by most viewers. Many critics labeled it as the worst film of the year. Some criticized its slow pace, while others found the musical element off-putting, potentially dissuading audiences who had initially enjoyed the first installment in the series. Additionally, some simply felt that turning a one-story film like Joker into a franchise was questionable.

As a passionate gamer, I can relate when a highly anticipated sequel disappoints. Just like how some gamers skipped playing the latest expansion pack of their favorite game due to negative reviews, many moviegoers opted out from watching Joker 2. Unfortunately, the hype was short-lived and, after only a week of buzz that couldn’t overcome the anticipation for its underperformance, Joker 2 vanished from pop-culture discussions as swiftly and quietly as a ghost in a haunted game level. In fact, the digital release came much sooner than expected, making it seem like a glitch in the matrix.

Now, we’re all set and eager to explore (or re-explore) the vibrant cityscape of Gotham. Will this musical event meet the negative rumors or surpass them with a positive surprise? Let’s discover together!

Joker: Folie à Deux is now streaming on Max.
