20 times Game of Thrones set the internet on fire
As a die-hard fan who has watched every single episode of Game of Thrones more times than I care to admit, let me tell you that the final season was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. The moments that stood out the most for me were undoubtedly Arya’s heroism in defeating the Night King and Daenerys’ transformation into the Mad Queen. These episodes were epic, nerve-wracking, and filled with heart-stopping action that kept me on the edge of my seat.
What were the scenes from Game of Thrones that caused the most stir among viewers? (or) Which episodes of Game of Thrones elicited the strongest responses from fans? (or) Which parts of Game of Thrones generated the biggest online reactions by fans?
Caution: Obviously, this article contains SPOILERS for all eight seasons of Game of Thrones
It’s quite challenging to single out the standout scenes from ‘Game of Thrones’, as there were so many jaw-dropping moments in each season that left viewers in awe. The show didn’t hesitate to surprise us by eliminating significant characters, taking unforeseen turns, and veering away from our expectations. This makes it difficult to pinpoint the most memorable instances from this captivating series.
Some are among the show’s greatest bits, while others weren’t quite as popular but incited firestorms of talk. So what follows are the 20 times Game of Thrones broke the Internet the most, and that still only scratches the surface of how mind-blowing this show could be.
Notable moments include:
Jamie pushes Bran out of the Broken Tower (Season 1 Episode 1, “Winter is Coming”)
The pilot episode served as the show’s initial buzzworthy scene, and it remains remarkable even now. Initially, it seemed like a typical fantasy drama, complete with the royal family visiting Winterfell, character introductions, and setting up the storyline. However, the final scene took everyone by surprise. Bran Stark ascended a tower only to discover Jamie Lannister, twin sibling of Cersei Lannister, together – a twist that left viewers stunned. In this shocking climax, Jamie, who had been perceived as an arrogant yet generally likable character, pushed the boy from the tower.
At this instance, it became clear that no character on ‘Game of Thrones’ was invincible, a truth the series repeatedly emphasized during its entire duration. For example…
Ned is beheaded (Season 1 Episode 9, “Baelor”)
In the annals of “Game of Thrones,” no action has been as bold and unexpected as this one. The decision to bring in renowned actor Sean Bean as Ned Stark greatly benefited the series, lending a sense of depth and appeal that drew viewers in. When Ned was incarcerated by the Lannisters in King’s Landing, spectators assumed he would somehow manage an escape and ignite a rebellion. Given our extensive investment in Ned Stark, one might think they wouldn’t eliminate the show’s main character, right?
One poignant scene in the series stands out: Ned is publicly executed, leaving his daughters shocked and devastated, an act that foreshadows future conflicts. Few other shows exhibit the audacity to portray such a dramatic event as this one does.
The birth of the dragons (Season 1 Episode 10, “Fire and Blood”)
We were anticipating the appearance of dragons on the show, but witnessing it unfold was still awe-inspiring. Unlike typical kid-friendly dragon scenarios where eggs hatch to reveal adorable baby dragons, this scene involved fire, blood, and human sacrifices as Daenerys ascended onto her husband Drogo’s funeral pyre with her eggs. Once the smoke cleared, an unscathed Daenerys emerged from the ashes accompanied by a trio of baby dragons. The arrival of these dragons marked Daenerys as the Mother of Dragons, signaling more thrilling events to follow.
The Battle of Blackwater (Season 2 Episode 9, “Blackwater”)
As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but express my profound appreciation for the legendary battle scenes that made “Game of Thrones” a household name. However, if I were to pick one battle as the cream of the crop, it would undoubtedly be the first one – the epic clash between the Lannisters and Stannis Baratheon’s army, unfolding primarily in and around King’s Landing. This wasn’t just a land-based conflict; it spilled over to the seas as well. The production’s intricacy was mind-boggling, from the intense one-on-one skirmishes to the breathtaking spectacle of ships exploding under the cover of night.
Daenerys breaks the chains (Season 3 Episode 4, “And Now His Watch Is Ended”)
In the episode, Daenerys Targaryen took a significant step. In the city of Astapor, known for its slaves, she encountered a slave trader leading the Unsullied, the world’s most formidable warriors. It appears that Daenerys consented to exchange one of her dragons for this formidable Unsullied army. Later, she showed her ability to speak the slavers’ language and commanded the Unsullied to slaughter the slavers, while her dragons ignited flames against their enemies.
Viewing Daenerys amidst the flames of dragons solidified her image as an authentic leader and a terror for those who crossed her path. Subsequently, she liberated the Unsullied, whom willingly followed her, thereby enhancing her reputation not only as the Mother of Dragons but also the Liberator of Chains.
The dueling baths (Season 3 Episode 5 “Kissed By Fire”)
In this episode, two pivotal moments featured bathing scenes between characters, each one captivating in its unique manner. Initially, the tension that had built since their first encounter culminated when Ygriette and Jon embraced romantically in a sultry cave setting. Amidst their passionate union, Ygriette playfully reminded Jon of his ignorance with a “you know nothing.
In Harrenhal, where Jamie Lannister and Brienne of Tarth bathed while imprisoned, a delirious Jaime confessed to slaying the Mad King in an attempt to prevent him from devastating King’s Landing. This deed, which once stained his reputation, now appears to be the most honorable act he ever performed.
This scene was a fantastic showing for the actors, building sympathy for Jamie and deepending his connection with Brienne.
The Red Wedding (Season 3 Episode 9, “The Rains of Castamere”)
Even though many book-readers had anticipated it, the Red Wedding still took them by surprise. It appeared that the Starks were on the verge of a promising alliance with both the Freys and Boltons. However, as a familiar tune began to play at the wedding between Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey, Catelyn Stark suddenly comprehended they had walked into a trap. In the midst of this, Talisa Stark – who was pregnant – was fatally stabbed, while the Stark forces were brutally slaughtered by the combined forces of the Boltons and Freys. Arya Stark arrived just in time to witness the remnants of the chaos before the Hound rescued her from the carnage.
In this rephrased version: Catelyn attempts to negotiate her son’s safety by capturing one of Walder’s wives as a hostage, but he remains indifferent towards his wife and cold-heartedly witnesses Robb’s murder. Tragically, Catelyn meets the same fate as she is fatally wounded in the final moments of the episode. This chilling scene was shocking, awe-inspiring, and arguably the most impactful moment the series never quite managed to surpass again.
The Purple Wedding (Season 4, Episode 2, “The Lion and the Rose”)
Moving from one gloomy wedding ceremony to another, I must say that the second one was far more pleasing to observe. King Joffrey, indeed, was an abhorrent character, a callow psychopath who derived pleasure from inflicting pain on others and undoubtedly the worst candidate for kingship.
As a passionate moviegoer, let me express that the tragic demise of Joffrey at his wedding to Margaery Tyrell was a long-awaited, albeit gruesome, relief for many fans. His character was despicable and cruel, making his suffering justifiable in my eyes. The revelation that Lady Olenna Tyrell, Margaery’s grandmother, orchestrated the poisoning added an exciting twist to the plot, creating a moment worthy of countless memes. This event kickstarted some of the most captivating storylines the series has ever produced.
Jamie and Cersei’s reunion (Season 4 Episode 3 “Breaker of Chains”)
The reunion of Jamie and Cersei sparked much conversation among fans, but not all of it was favorable. After being separated for so long, they met again at the funeral of their son Joffrey, where he lay in state. However, the scene took a disturbing turn when Cersei rejected Jamie’s advances, and he forced himself upon her. This incident led to heated debates among fans, and it became a point of contention for some. The fact that the moment was widely discussed doesn’t necessarily mean it was spoken about in a positive light.
The Mountain vs the Viper (Season 4 Episode 8, “The Mountain and the Viper”)
In a court case for Joffrey’s murder, Tyrion requests a trial by combat. Oberyn Martell steps forward as his representative, taking on the massive Gregor Clegane – also known as “the Mountain” – who fights under the crown’s authority in this duel.
The battle is impressive, highlighting Oberyn’s proficiency and agility overpowering the Mountain’s strength. Oberyn appears poised to win, but his arrogance leads him to taunt Gregor about his sister Elia’s death years ago. This provocation gives Gregor an opportunity to knock Oberyn down brutally and squash his head in a shocking scene. Despite its grim end, it’s thrilling to watch.
Tyrion’s revenge (Season 4 Episode 10, “The Children”)
Following being falsely accused of murder and staring down death, I managed to escape my predicament to exact my vengeance. After avenging my lover Shae’s betrayal during my trial by taking her life, I found myself confronting my father Tywin, who happened to be on the privy at that moment. The ensuing showdown was electrifying, as we both expressed our mutual loathing before I ended his life with a crossbow bolt. This dramatic ending perfectly wrapped up my storyline in King’s Landing and eliminated one of the show’s formidable adversaries.
Shireen’s death (Season 5 Episode 9, “The Dance of Dragons”)
Among many shocking deaths in “Game of Thrones”, the passing of young Shireen Baratheon, the daughter of Stannis and Selyse, stands out as particularly unsettling.
In the face of hindering weather, Melisandre, the red witch, informs Stannis that only dark sorcery can thaw the snow, and such magic necessitates a sacrifice. Initially hesitant, Stannis consents to immolate his own daughter as an offering. The heart-wrenching sight of her pleading for clemency leaves viewers in shock. It’s no surprise that the audience was enraged following the broadcast. Tragically, this gruesome act proves futile, as Stannis suffers defeat at Winterfell by the Boltons not long after.
Jon Snow’s death and return (Season 5 Episode 10, “Mother’s Mercy”and Season 6 Episode 2, “Home”)
In the fifth season, Jon Snow boldly assumed command over the Night’s Watch, forged an alliance with the Wildlings, and readied himself against the approaching White Walkers. However, what he perceived as a means to preserve the Seven Kingdoms was seen by others in the Watch as a breach of their vows. In a tragic twist reminiscent of Shakespearean drama, Jon was ultimately betrayed and fatally stabbed by his own comrades.
Initially, I, as a movie enthusiast, shared the widespread anger among fans, believing that I had seen the last of my beloved show. However, little did we know that this supposed finale was merely a clever ploy. Kit Harington, who played Jon Snow, announced his exit from the series, but lo and behold, in season 6, Melisandre miraculously resurrected Jon Snow, causing an even greater stir and propelling the show to unprecedented levels of popularity once more.
Hold the Door (Season 6 Episode 5, “The Door”)
Among the beloved characters of the series, there’s Hodor – a large, simple-minded yet kind-hearted servant of the Starks who safeguarded Bran during their travels. His last scene was both poignant and shocking, leaving viewers in awe with an unexpected twist. Currently, Bran and his companions are under attack by White Walkers. Selflessly, Hodor stands firm, holding a door shut as long as he can to protect them.
While Bran, in the meantime, employs the abilities he has been nurturing throughout multiple seasons to travel back in time and inhabit a young individual known as Wylis. As time becomes indistinguishable, Wylis repeatedly utters the phrase “hold the door,” which eventually transforms into the name “Hodor.” This revelation strikes Bran, as he understands that it was him who shattered Hodor’s mind. This incident is what caused Hodor to only be able to say one word – “Hodor.” It serves as a heart-wrenching finale to his sad tale.
Cersei takes the crown (Season 6 Episode 10, “The Winds of Winter”)
In Seasons 5 and 6 of Game of Thrones, it seemed like a continuous path of humiliation for Cersei Lannister. Her opponents, particularly Margarey, outsmarted her, she was put on trial, had her hair shorn, and was compelled to parade naked through King’s Landing streets. Facing imminent execution, Cersei, as always, had a trick up her sleeve. When Margarey began to sense something amiss, Cersei detonated a stockpile of wildfire, reducing the Grand Sept of Baelor and all her adversaries within it to rubble. Instead of standing trial, she became the judge.
Later on, Tommen, deeply saddened by Cersei’s fate, ends his life, paving the way for Cersei to ascend as Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. This event serves yet again as a reminder that no one should underestimate the power and cunning of those close to us.
Littlefinger’s fall (Season 7 Episode 7, “The Dragon and the Wolf”)
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but point out that the tumultuous chain of events throughout this series often feels like Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish’s doing. This cunning manipulator has a knack for stirring up chaos, backstabbing whenever he can, and skillfully orchestrating his rise to power. Through season 7, it seemed as if Littlefinger was once again playing the game masterfully, attempting to drive a wedge between Arya and Sansa.
Almost succeeded, but in the end it was Littlefinger who stood trial instead, as the Starks publicly unveiled his long list of crimes. Caught off guard, he was reduced to begging for mercy on bended knee, only to meet his end at Arya’s hand – the same blade he had once used to frame Tyrion years ago. Fans rejoiced as this fitting conclusion played out.
Jon’s true identity revealed (Season 7 Episode 7, “The Dragon and the Wolf”)
From the start, Jon Snow stood out as more than just Ned Stark’s illegitimate son to fans. However, it was quite a shock when it was disclosed that Jon’s real parents were Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, Ned’s sister. This revelation came as a surprise not only to Jon but also to the viewers. Furthermore, contrary to popular belief, Rhaegar and Lyanna had a genuine love for each other; their marriage sparked confusion which ultimately ignited the conflict that forms the central plot of the series.
This implied that Jon was the legitimate ruler of the Iron Throne, and it substantiated his significance for the kingdom’s destiny while also revising the commonly held belief about the historical events in Westeros among fans.
Arya kills the Night King (Season 8 Episode 3, “The Long Night”)
Ultimately, it all boiled down to this pivotal moment: After a long-awaited eight-season buildup, the battle between the living and the dead reached its peak in an extended episode that saw the gruesome demise of significant characters such as Theon, Jorah, Lyanna, and others. The confrontations were intense and grisly as the Night King ruthlessly swept through the ranks of the living.
The mystery about who would defeat him was resolved when Arya Stark suddenly appeared from the darkness, plunging a Valyrian steel blade into the Night King. This act ended his danger and provided Arya with a heroic moment to conclude one of the series’ major plotlines.
The Mother of Dragons (Season 8 Episode 5, “The Bells”)
Some viewers argue that Daenerys’ actions towards the end felt illogical, tarnishing her character development. Conversely, others believe it was a necessary conclusion to her storyline. Regardless, this climactic episode underscored the culmination of the war for the Iron Throne, featuring an exhilarating battle where King’s Landing’s forces were overpowered by the combined might of the Unsullied and Stark troops.
In this tale, The Hound and The Mountain clash in a fierce fight, while Jamie and Cersei’s story comes to a close. Daenerys Targaryen emerges victorious, but the furious Mother of Dragons ascends on Drogon to torch the city, igniting a contentious and ongoing discussion.
The finale (Season 8 Episode 6, “The Iron Throne”)
At long last, we arrive at our destination. The final episode of Game of Thrones, for many, is one of the most contentious, disputed, and widely talked about endings in television history. We witnessed significant twists such as Jon killing Daenerys, Bran ascending to the throne, Sansa ruling as Queen of the North, the Iron Throne dissolving, and Arya embarking on her journey outside Westeros. While this seemed like a fitting conclusion, fans felt it fell short of the series’ impressive legacy, leaving many disillusioned.
Despite any differences, everyone seems to concur that “The Iron Throne” was anything but dull. Its ongoing conversation demonstrates that, whether positively or negatively, the impact of “Game of Thrones” will endure for future generations.
