If you haven’t finished your binge-watch and prefer to steer clear of spoilers, now would be a good time to pause. However, for those who have seen everything up to this point, let’s dive straight in and discuss the intriguing events that transpired in the season 4 finale!
Just before the second last episode’s dramatic ending, where the Pogues together with Rafe found themselves on the beach after their boat was swept ashore due to a ferocious storm. With JJ and Sarah rejoining the group, they embarked on a journey across the desert, aiming for the town of Essaouira. Their goal is straightforward: find Groff and retrieve the scroll so they can regain possession of it.
After reaching the city, it doesn’t take much time before they create a commotion at the town market by snatching apples from a merchant following Sarah’s sudden bout of sickness. With the police in pursuit, they opt to leave Rafe behind instead of returning for him and continue on their journey wearing disguises provided by Cleo.
Eventually, The Pogues head towards the docks, and John B and Sarah secretly depart for Groff’s boat to hunt for the scroll while others stand guard. Unfortunately, they don’t locate the scroll since Groff possesses it, but they do stumble upon images of the scroll that appear to have been snapped through a lens they manage to seize before hastily escaping when one mercenary appears and almost catches them. Thankfully, their swift actions prove successful as they escape with fragments of the map.
In the meantime, Rafe found a way to turn things around after snatching a wallet during the confusion as the police tried to apprehend him but released him instead. He spent the money on necessary items like a phone which he subsequently used to contact Sofia for the hotel’s name, a detail Groff had provided when finalizing their agreement using a pen. Trusting his instincts, Rafe found the hotel where Groff and the hired guns were lying low and managed to rescue Groff seconds before they needed to escape with the scroll in tow.
Following their escape from the city aboard one of the mercenaries’ stolen motorcycles, Rafe falls back on his old habits by pressuring Groff for details regarding the crown. When he reveals it’s worth a massive fortune, Rafe makes it clear that he intends to seize the money as retribution for the funds Groff had cheated him out of. Groff presents Rafe with a scroll and a lens, but Groff is determined not to let Rafe take control and informs Rafe about Sofia’s deception before attacking him. A fierce battle breaks out, and Rafe shoves Groff into a well, takes the scroll, and leaves him for dead.
As The Pogues followed their map, it led them towards the same route previously taken by Groff and Rafe. Eventually, they discovered a well and found Groff trapped inside. Groff urgently requested JJ’s assistance to free him so he could guide them to the crown, claiming they could share it together. However, this time JJ recognized his deceit and decided to abandon Groff in the well, providing him with some water. Although we suspect that won’t be of much help, such is the fate of being the world’s worst father.
All roads lead to Agapenta
Eventually, The Pogues arrive at Agapenta, but they’re not alone; Rafe had already gotten there ahead of them and brought companions along. As Rafe tries to decipher the scroll, Dalia and her armed mercenaries appear on the scene, demanding that he surrender both the scroll and lens. Just as they move in to capture Rafe, Sarah grabs the gun she’d earlier taken from one of the mercenaries and shoots a gas tank on one of their RVs, creating the diversion necessary to save him.
Rafe and the Pogues quickly depart as the mercenaries pursue them. They reach a building and lock themselves within, but time is running out. While Pope and Cleo maintain their post, the others leave in a hurry, eventually encountering Rafe who openly expresses his distrust towards them, particularly Sarah, whom he persistently blames for their father’s demise.
Sarah eventually discloses to Rafe the actual events that transpired, reminiscing about the instance when Singh’s armed men aimed at her, ready to take her life. However unexpectedly, their father stepped in and took the bullets meant for her, thus saving her. Contrary to his assumptions, Sarah clarifies that she holds no intention of betraying him since he is all the family she has left. The siblings then warmly embrace, sharing a poignant moment; however, this tender moment does not last long as the mercenaries approach them menacingly.
John B, Sarah, and Rafe depart in search of the crown, while the remaining group stalls Dalia’s men by engaging them individually and distracting them. Upon studying the map, they come across an Arabic inscription, which prompts Sarah to discover a translation on the reverse side of the corresponding photo: “At the break of day, touch the earth to reach heaven.
As John B lifts the scroll towards the sunlight, they spot a figure emerge on the map that aligns with the monument within the ancient ruins. However, their excitement over the case development is swiftly dampened when Rafe notices an approaching sandstorm.
JJ and Kiara rejoin forces with John B, Sarah, and Rafe, but Pope and Cleo seek safety following an attack where Cleo was wounded by a mercenary. A sandstorm rolls in, causing the group to disperse; John B and Sarah look for cover while Rafe, JJ, and Kiara pursue the statue. Due to his injury, Rafe can’t scale the heights, so JJ takes over, promising Rafe he’ll still receive his share.
As Lightner gets nearer to Pope and Cleo, Pope, with no other choice left, discharges the last bullet from JJ’s gun, fatally shooting Lightner. At that exact moment, Sarah arrives on time to stop a mercenary from killing John B. Rafe, in a bold move reminiscent of Kook, manages to eliminate two mercenaries single-handedly, providing JJ the necessary time to climb the statue in pursuit of the crown.

As JJ ascends to the peak of the sculpture, he discovers an object within the sculpture’s eye and retrieves the Blue Crown. In the meantime, Dalia is poised to fire at him, but JJ notices her and both JJ and Kiara flee just in the nick of time. However, during their escape, they become separated while trying to navigate their way down from the ruins’ summit. Regrettably, Kiara encounters Groff, who had earlier managed to escape the well by clawing his way out.
While Groff brandishes a knife against Kiara’s neck, he demands he surrender the crown. JJ complies, explaining to his father that there are more valuable things in life than riches. However, even after obtaining what he sought, Groff treacherously stabs JJ in the abdomen, remarking that he should have given him the rope earlier. With the crown in hand and JJ left for dead, Groff flees the scene.
JJ falls to the ground, whispering to Kiara that he’s already fulfilled his wish and asking her to look after the others. Before he dies in her arms, he tells her “I love you.” The scene transitions into a heart-wrenching montage that will undoubtedly make fans cry, as John B pays tribute to his deceased best friend who held the group together. The remaining Pogues rush to their fallen comrade and bury him in Agapenta.
Following that, we shift focus to Groff, who has eluded capture with the Blue Crown. The scene ends in darkness before moving on to the Pogues huddled around a fire, mourning their fallen comrade. Rafe shares Groff’s intended destination, Lisbon, and suggests they should go after him if it were one of their friends. Kiara concurs, and John B asserts that JJ would retaliate, leading us to the season finale where the camera zooms in on Kiara, swearing vengeance.
With the end of season 4, we say goodbye to one of the Pogues and their thirst for vengeance has only grown stronger. The upcoming final season promises to be a memorable one, driven by the Pogues’ determination to honor their lost comrade.
