He has the right appearance, a solid background, and at just over forty years old, he’s young enough to play the Joker for many years to come. While we don’t know how menacing the new DC Universe version will be, his previous work shows he can convincingly portray both a truly terrifying Joker or a more restrained one, depending on what the role requires.
The search for the Joker in James Gunn’s DC Universe will likely be as competitive as the recent hunt for Batman, meaning casting directors will have a lot of big names to choose from. Because of this, actor Rob Needham might ultimately only be considered for his role as Batman, even though he’d be a great fit for the wider DCU.
I would’ve absolutely loved to see his stage performance as the Joker brought to life in a film, but it seems unlikely he’ll join the DC Universe as the character. That just makes me even more excited to watch season 2 of Batman: Caped Crusader when it comes out – it’s where I’ll get my Joker fix now!
