5 time-traveling tips from Happy Death Day viewers should learn ahead of Time Cut

As a seasoned cinephile who’s seen more slasher films than I can count on two hands (and a few toes), I must say I’m thrilled about Netflix’s upcoming film, Time Cut. The tantalizing trailer and its eerie similarities to the Happy Death Day series have me hooked.

Are you looking forward to Netflix’s upcoming movie “Time Cut,” scheduled for release on October 30? Directed by Hannah Macpherson, “Time Cut” tells the story of a teen named Lucy who unintentionally travels through time from the present to 2003, just a few days before a masked killer takes her sister’s life.

The elements found in “Time Cut” are reminiscent of the 2017 movie “Happy Death Day” and its 2019 sequel “Happy Death Day 2U”. Both stories involve time travel and a homicidal maniac seeking violence. Unlike “Happy Death Day”, which revolves around repeated trips in time through loops, adding a multiverse twist as characters re-live events over and over again, “Time Cut” appears to delve into the concept of time travel differently, possibly introducing new dimensions or approaches to this theme.

In the sequel titled “Happy Death Day 2U,” we meet Ryan, who finds himself reliving the same ominous day repeatedly, culminating in his death at the hands of a chilling figure wearing a college mascot mask. Tree, the protagonist from the previous film “Happy Death Day,” informs him about her own harrowing experience where she too was trapped in a time loop. In the earlier movie, Tree discovered that her sorority roommate Lori was the murderer and ended the cycle by eliminating Lori, thereby escaping the loop.

It turns out that Tree got trapped in a recurring time event initially due to the Sisyphus Quantum Cooling Device, a science experiment Ryan and his friends were conducting for their class. Unfortunately, when Ryan tried to shut down his own loop, he made an error instead, causing Tree to repeat September 18th indefinitely. However, some parts of that day have changed now, introducing the concept of multiple universes.

In the movie “Happy Death Day,” we discover that Tree’s mother passed away on the very same day as she’s currently experiencing, three years ago. It also happens to be her birthday. Despite meeting with her father for lunch, she still feels the absence of both parents. However, in the alternate reality depicted in “Happy Death Day 2U,” Tree’s mother is alive, giving her the option to remain in the current dimension or return to the one she knew before. Ultimately, Tree chooses to return to the past and bids a poignant farewell to her mom.

3. Be bold and patient when trying to figure out the killer

Instead of figuring out who the culprit is in a straightforward manner, an entertaining montage sequence could be used where Tree appears to die multiple times as she investigates. Meanwhile, Demi Lovato’s song “Confident” would play in the background to enhance the atmosphere. Keeping a list of possible suspects and covertly observing them might help unmask the killer in this thrilling pursuit.

4. If all else fails, just end it all

Consider this advice applicable if you find yourself in a recurring timeline scenario. In the original “Happy Death Day” film, we witness a sequence where Tree is repeatedly killed by an unseen assailant. Conversely, in “Happy Death Day 2U”, Tree is seen reliving her own death multiple times to dodge a stalker. However, later on, the genuine murderer claims the life of Nick while he and Tree are within his private quarters.
