I’ve been a fan of the series forever, and it’s amazing to think it all started as a small, self-published black-and-white comic! Now it’s exploded into everything – comics, cartoons, movies, video games, toys, you name it! It’s also spawned a ton of imitators, with other comics trying to copy that four-word title and four animal character formula. And honestly, another one is coming out from Oni Press soon, which is…interesting, to say the least!
This July, Oni Press will release a four-issue comic series called Super Mondo Mega Mutts, created by writer Curt Pires and artist Juan Gedeon. The series has inspired many imitations over the years, including comics with titles like Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters, Pre-Teen Dirty-Gene Kung-Fu Kangaroos, Geriatric Gangrene Jujitsu Gerbils, and Cold Blooded Chameleon Commandos—all of which are actual published comics.
Super Mondo Mega Mutts is a recent addition to the world of comics inspired by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. While many have attempted to replicate the success of Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, none have quite measured up. Could this comic finally be the one to achieve a similar level of popularity?
Super Mondo Mega Mutts Come Out Swinging
Oni Press has revealed more details about the upcoming comic, promising a wild new installment! Writer Curt Pires (known for Lost Fantasy and Fireborn) teams up with artist Juan Gedeon to deliver an action-packed continuation of this exciting story that’s sure to be a hit with readers.
The Mega Mutts—Wolf, Frankee, Freddie, and Griffy—became local heroes when they stopped the Goo Gang from causing chaos in Los Angeles, but their victory has made them enemies. Now, the mysterious and powerful Grey Cube corporation is hunting them down, and this time it’s a personal vendetta. Outnumbered and forced to flee, the Mutts are pushed to their breaking point as a huge battle erupts across the city. And just when you think things can’t get more intense, Krusher Kat arrives! Get ready for explosions, a tough attitude, and intense claw-to-claw combat as these underdogs fight for their lives! This issue raises the stakes, delivers non-stop action, and proves the Mutts won’t give up!
Following the current popularity of IDW Comics’ series, it’s a great time to launch a new comic inspired by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Since 1983, the Turtles have consistently been a major part of pop culture. What made the original comic stand out was that, despite its playful concept, it was a genuinely well-made book. Creators Peter and Kevin drew inspiration from comic legends like Frank Miller and Jack Kirby, incorporating their storytelling techniques while still forging their own unique style.
It’s unusual for something to become incredibly popular twice, but Super Mondo Mega Mutts has the potential to be the next big hit like The Walking Dead, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Invincible all rolled into one. We’ll have to wait and see how things develop for these dogs, and perhaps adding a cat to the story could make it even more successful.
Super Mondo Mega Mutts #1, can be purchased this July wherever comics are sold.
