Saoirse Ronan looks back on Ryan Gosling’s ‘sad’ firing from The Lovely Bones over ‘creative differences’

Saoirse Ronan looks back on Ryan Gosling's 'sad' firing from The Lovely Bones over 'creative differences'

As a dedicated cinephile who has witnessed the ebb and flow of Hollywood’s most captivating tales, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when reflecting upon the story of Saoirse Ronan and Ryan Gosling’s aborted collaboration in The Lovely Bones. It’s like a movie within a movie, filled with drama, tension, and a bittersweet twist that only Tinseltown could conjure up.

After the original co-star, Ryan Gosling, was let go from the 2009 supernatural drama The Lovely Bones, Saoirse Ronan reflected on a partnership that had never materialized.

Initially, the actor from Blade Runner 2049, aged 43, was chosen to portray the sorrowful father of a slain girl in another production. However, before shooting started, he was let go by the director, Peter Jackson.

During her interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast on Monday, Ronan (who has previously acknowledged missing out on a Harry Potter role) expressed regret that Gosling was dismissed from the movie, as it garnered mostly negative critic reviews and underperformed financially.

Following his dismissal, the main character’s part was taken over by Mark Wahlberg, who was approximately a decade older and already had experience as a parent, thus stepping into the leading role.

Initially, Gosling maintained he left the production voluntarily because of creative disagreements, but later in a 2010 Hollywood Reporter discussion, he confessed that Jackson actually fired him on his initial shoot day, due to an unexpected 60-pound increase in weight.

Ronan, aged 30, verified that she wasn’t involved in any scenes with Gosling as he was let go early on in the filming process. However, she appreciated the opportunity to get to know him better during the initial stages of production.

She expressed her affection for both Ryan and his dog, George, saying she adored them. Unfortunately, she felt sad because she knew Ryan wouldn’t be around anymore. However, she believed the circumstances that led to their separation were completely justified.

She added: ‘And I have spoken to both now, and I complete — it happens, you know what I mean? It’s not personal, necessarily; it’s just sometimes you’re not on the same page.’

During pre-production conversations, it’s said that Gosling suggested to Jackson that the character of the mourning father ought to have put on some extra pounds. However, Jackson allegedly didn’t concur with this idea.

Nevertheless, Gosling didn’t inform the director of The Lord of the Rings about his intention to gain weight, a goal he achieved by consuming large amounts of melted Häagen-Dazs ice cream.

In a surprising turn of events, the actor from The Nice Guys was noticeably heavier when he stepped onto the film set, tipping the scales at approximately 210 pounds, which was 60 pounds more than his usual weight. Additionally, sporting a beard was another unexpected element that he hadn’t discussed with Jackson prior to their meeting on set.

Ryan Gosling shared with The Hollywood Reporter that he arrived unprepared on set, realizing his mistake later. He then found himself out of work due to being overweight.

Initially, it appears that Gosling’s unilateral physical changes were the direct cause of Jackson firing him. However, it’s important to note that they had faced creative conflicts during pre-production. Moreover, Gosling, being single and without children at the time, was concerned that his youth might make it challenging for him to convincingly portray a father experiencing profound grief after losing his child in such tragic circumstances.

I found myself yearning for more collaboration with Jackson before we started filming The Lovely Bones, but alas, his plate was overflowing due to the grand-scale preparations required for such a high-budget production.

Even though Ronan felt disappointed upon Gosling’s sudden termination, she managed to find a positive aspect in the unexpected changes to the casting.

She clarified, “Mark took on the role, you understand, more like a father figure to perhaps three children. It seemed to Ryan, who was around 27 years old at the time, that Mark had more parenting experience than him.

Wahlberg now has four children with his wife Rhea Durham.

In 2011, Ryan Gosling began dating Eva Mendes, his co-star from the film The Place Beyond the Pines.

The couple share two children: Esmeralda, 10, and Amada, eight.

In The Lovely Bones, the character portrayed by Ronan was a 14-year-old high school student who tragically experienced kidnapping, sexual abuse, and murder at the hands of her neighbor, played by Stanley Tucci.

In a different scenario, Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz portrayed the characters of a couple who gradually grew suspicious that their neighbor might have had something to do with their daughter’s vanishing.

Critics found “The Lovely Bones” lacking in some areas, particularly the excessive use of digitally created images to depict the realm where Ronan existed following her demise. Some also criticized the portrayal of sensational crime scenes.

The movie earned more than $93 million worldwide, but this figure fell short of expectations due to its production cost of $65 million.

In 2014, Ronan seized an opportunity to work alongside Gosling, since she featured in his first directorial film, “Lost River.

She mentioned that it was delightful to collaborate with him at a later time, referring to the actor who transitioned into directing. “He remains consistent,” she added, “he barely alters.

Despite finding it enjoyable to collaborate with Gosling, the film Lost River did not receive the same level of appreciation from both critics and viewers as they might have hoped.
