3 Years Later, Star Wars’ Most Mysterious Imperial Villain Finally Speaks

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, episodes 5-6

A mysterious villain from Star Wars has remained largely silent since first appearing three years ago—until now. Marrok, also known as The First Brother, quickly became a captivating character when he debuted in the Ahsoka series, set in the New Republic Era. Now, the latest episodes of Maul – Shadow Lord reveal Marrok’s backstory during the Age of the Empire, showing him hunting down Jedi survivors and even Darth Maul himself.

Honestly, a big part of what makes Marrok so intriguing is how little they’ve actually shown us since 2023. It’s different from other villains we’ve seen in Star Wars – Marrok barely spoke and we got absolutely no information about his past in Ahsoka. The most we really learned about the First Brother was actually through how he lost to Ahsoka Tano. It’s a really unusual approach, and it makes him feel even more mysterious.

The latest episodes of Maul – Shadow Lord (5 and 6) are giving Marrok a significantly larger role in the Star Wars universe than ever before. He not only speaks for the first time, but he’s quickly become a key player in the ongoing story of Shadow Lord.

2 Years Ago, Marrok Debuted In Ahsoka (And Barely Said Anything)

When Ahsoka debuted in 2023, Marrok quickly became a memorable character as an Imperial Inquisitor. What made him unusual was that he was still operating after the Empire had fallen and the New Republic had begun. Throughout his appearances, Marrok wore dark armor and fought with a spinning, double-bladed lightsaber, always concealing his face behind a helmet.

During the New Republic period, Marrok worked with the Dark Jedi mercenaries Shin Hati and Baylan Skoll while serving Morgan Elsbeth. In the 2023 series Ahsoka, Marrok rarely spoke, only responding with “as you wish” to Shin Hati’s commands. The biggest surprise about Marrok came after his second lightsaber fight with Ahsoka Tano on Seatos – his death revealed he was a reanimated corpse brought back to life by Morgan’s Nightsister magic, which likely explained why he didn’t have much dialogue.

Now, Shadow Lord Puts Marrok Front And Center, Hunting Maul

As a huge Star Wars fan, I was thrilled to see Marrok, even in that quick appearance in Tales of the Empire back in 2024. But honestly, it felt too short! Thankfully, it looks like he’s finally getting the full story in Maul – Shadow Lord, which is coming out three years later, and I can’t wait to see what they do with him.

This animated Star Wars series takes place long before the events of Ahsoka, showing Marrok as a fully functioning Imperial Inquisitor. At this point in the timeline, he’s actively helping the Empire track down Maul, who was once Emperor Palpatine’s apprentice.

Throughout the episodes, Marrok is shown actively investigating leads, questioning people, and even fighting with lightsabers – not only against Darth Maul, but also against the remaining Jedi on Janix. He’s a much more developed character, with significant dialogue throughout both episodes, and ultimately informs his superiors about Maul’s confirmed location at the end of Shadow Lord, episode 6.

The recent voice acting reveal confirms that A. J. LoCascio will be voicing Marrok. LoCascio has a background in animation, including work on various Star Wars shows, as well as roles like Lego Han Solo. He most recently voiced Gambit in both X-Men ’97 and Marvel Rivals.

Marrok remains a mysterious figure – we still don’t know what’s under his helmet or how he originally died. However, it’s great to see him developed with actual dialogue. It will be really interesting to see what happens with Marrok as the story of Shadow Lord unfolds.

New episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord release Mondays on Disney+ from Lucasfilm Animation.
