The Project star and ABC Radio host reveals devastating family loss
As a lifestyle expert with years of experience under my belt, I cannot help but feel deeply moved by the heartrending news of Hamish Macdonald’s father, Iain, passing away at the age of 85. Having lost my own father to a similar battle, I can empathize with the profound sorrow that comes from losing a parent.
The Project star Hamish Macdonald has revealed the heartbreaking loss of his father Iain, aged 85.
On a LinkedIn post made on Friday, the TV host, aged 43, announced that his father had passed away over the weekend due to Parkinson’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia.
Hamish posted a touching but unbiased tribute to a photo of his father on the platform, following his father’s specific requests.
He specified in his will that the funeral notices should be brief, straightforward, and devoid of personal opinions or feelings.
On Sunday, at the age of 85, he passed away. He was a devoted father and grandfather, a passionate rower and skier, as well as a dedicated pharmacist. His absence will be deeply felt.
Hamish went on with the homage, emphasizing that his father’s passing was ‘tranquil’, even though his health struggles were severe.
‘My father struggled greatly with the loss of autonomy brought on by Parkinson’s and Lewy Body Dementia, yet he found peace in his final moments, enveloped by our loving family.’
In the Elderly Care network, he was given exceptional attention by caregivers, nurses, and physicians who upheld his respect and dignity until his last moment. We extend our gratitude to them.
He signed off the tribute with an affectionate: ‘Love you Grumble Bum x.’
Many of Hamish’s broadcasting peers promptly expressed their sympathies, among them being Channel 10 news anchor Sandra Sully.
‘Big hugs to you Hamish. It’s all so very sad when you lose a parent,’ Sandra wrote.
Geraldine Doogue, a longtime contributor to ABC, and co-host of the ABC podcast Global Roaming with Hamish, expressed warmth by saying: ‘Indeed, Hamish, we’re like peas in a pod. Your support for him was truly remarkable, as it appeared to me. Wishing you all the best on your journey without him.’
As a committed follower of the knowledge shared by Dementia Australia, I’ve learned that Lewy body dementia encompasses two distinct types of dementia: Dementia with Lewy Bodies and Parkinson’s Disease Dementia.
Lewy body dementia cause changes in a sufferer’s thinking, movement, behaviour and bodily functions.
In simpler terms, a Lewy body refers to an intricate knot of a specific protein known as alpha-synuclein within brain cells. The presence of these twisted proteins can lead to harm, impacting areas like movement, cognition (thinking), and behavior.
2024 saw the ex-host of ABC’s Q&A teaming up with fellow journalist and dementia patient Jim Rogers to co-host the Dementia Australia podcast titled “Hold the Moment”.
When talking to Hello Care regarding the podcast, Hamish expressed his astonishment at meeting the individuals living with dementia during the project.
In his role as a journalist, Hamish has encountered numerous individuals battling dementia. However, it struck particularly close to him a few years back when his father was himself diagnosed with dementia.
Listening to the personal experiences of individuals coping with dementia can help remove stigmas that deter people from seeking assistance, lessen the effects of social detachment, and foster a more supportive community.
Hearing a diagnosis carries a significant impact, and throughout this venture, I’ve been consistently amazed by the courageous individuals battling dementia who generously disclose intimate aspects of their lives to aid others.
