Terminator 2 Returns to Theaters for Its 35th Anniversary

To mark its 35th anniversary, will be back in cinemas for two months starting May 22nd. Fans can enjoy the film in a variety of formats, including original 35mm and 70mm film prints, as well as newly restored 4K and 3D digital versions.

While Cameron’s initial film was a low-budget science fiction thriller, Terminator 2 revolutionized action movies with its incredible stunts and groundbreaking special effects, essentially creating a model for many of the big-budget films we see today.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day Set the Tone for James Cameron’s Career

Terminator 2: Judgment Day was a huge commercial success. It earned $52.3 million during its opening weekend – the five-day Independence Day holiday – which was the second-best opening weekend ever, and a record for an R-rated movie. When it finished its initial run in theaters, Terminator 2 had made $520 million around the world, making it the top-grossing film of 1991 and, at the time, the third-highest-grossing film ever.

With Terminator 2: Judgment Day, James Cameron began a streak of groundbreaking films. He consistently broke new ground with visual effects and achieved massive box office success, notably with Titanic (which once held the record for highest-grossing film and remains in fourth place with $2.25 billion earned) and Avatar, which currently holds the title of the highest-grossing film of all time, having earned $2.92 billion.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day Is One of the Greatest Sci-Fi Movies of All Time

Not only was Terminator 2: Judgment Day a commercial success, but critics also praised it. It currently has a 91% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating widespread positive reviews.

Roger Ebert, the famous film critic, rated Terminator 2: Judgment Day 3.5 out of 4 stars. He noted that the movie successfully combined exciting action with thoughtful storytelling, something many action films fail to do.

Roger Ebert believed a strong villain is essential for any action movie. He praised Terminator 2 for having one, along with compelling heroes, a spirited heroine, and a dynamic performance by Furlong as the young boy. The film addresses concerns about violence by reducing the Terminator’s brutality, but Ebert felt it still delivers plenty of action.

As a huge cinema fan, I’ve always loved Terminator 2: Judgment Day, directed by James Cameron. He actually co-wrote the script with William Wisher, and it was fantastic to see Arnold Schwarzenegger back as the iconic T-800 Terminator – the same role he played in the original Terminator. And of course, Linda Hamilton returned as Sarah Connor, picking up right where she left off in the first film. It was a brilliant continuation of the story!

As a huge movie fan, I always found it fascinating how Eddie Furlong played John Connor – the kid destined to lead the fight against the machines. The story sets up this incredible chase because a super-advanced Terminator is sent back in time to eliminate John before he and his mom, with the help of the T-800, can prevent Skynet, this dangerous artificial intelligence, from ever becoming a threat.

The classic movie Terminator 2: Judgment Day will be back in cinemas on May 22nd. You can also watch it now on Paramount+.
