Three Women episode 4 recap: It’s time for Maggie’s story

This series revolves around her story, and in this specific episode, we explore the intricacies of her past. Previously, we learned that she was involved with her high school teacher, and this episode uncovers more details about their relationship. Let’s revisit the key events. SPOILER ALERT.

Regarding Maggie’s romantic encounters, Aaron from her English high school was not her initial experience with older men. During her summer vacation in Hawaii, staying with her sister and brother-in-law, Maggie crosses paths with an older gentleman. He is 31 at the time while she is only 16. As their bond deepens, physical intimacy ensues. Remarkably, in Hawaii, the age of consent is 16, so he avoids legal repercussions. However, it’s important to note that Maggie doesn’t desire such a situation.

It was agreed upon, as she made clear at the time. However, her distress isn’t directed towards him, but towards Aaron. This suggests that Aaron may have found methods to control or influence her. Despite Maggie expressing affection for the man in Hawaii, he only admitted to caring, not returning her love. I can’t say what his intentions were, but at least he didn’t try deceiving her like the high school teacher did. But it seems that Aaron uses this tactic to attract her.

At school, everyone is discussing the incident involving Maggie and an older man in Hawaii, clearly leaving her distressed. In this moment, Aaron steps up as a supportive figure, initially acting in a teacherly manner. However, he oversteps boundaries when he searches for Maggie’s phone number and initiates text conversations with her. At first, his messages seemed harmless, but one evening, he confessed his feelings for her. Over the years, from freshman to senior year, Maggie had been opening up to Aaron about her personal life, which was complicated due to her parents’ excessive drinking habits at home. This vulnerability was exploited by Aaron.

One day, Aaron invited Maggie over to his house when his family was absent, and it was then their relationship escalated physically. Later, when she reported him to the police, she explained that at times it seemed like his feelings for her were more intense than her own feelings for him. However, he was skilled at manipulating and luring her back. Despite this, before going to the authorities, Maggie had been holding out hope that he would reply to the email she sent expressing her belief that he loved her, as shown in the final scene of the first episode. But weeks passed without a response from him. And it was then that Maggie decided to approach the police.

In this narrative, we observe the gradual development of their relationship, and Maggie observes that he held all the reins when it came to determining the conditions of their conversations and how frequently they could interact. He instructed her to erase all their messages, which she complied with. The story concludes on a hopeful note as Maggie expresses optimism about reporting the matter to the police and informing her therapist that she’s prepared to return to school to pursue a career in social work. They reside in a tight-knit community, and the truth is now public knowledge. This journey won’t be simple. Despite the challenges depicted in episode 4 of Three Women , it concludes on an uplifting note, with Maggie and her father visiting an ice rink, her father assuring her she will be okay, and Maggie grinning as she skates.
