Who body swaps with who in each round in It’s What’s Inside?

Let’s talk about the three instances of body-swapping that the friends engage in at the party before we delve into how the movie concludes. During their catch-ups, Reuben, who is the center of attention, discloses that he has invited Forbes, a friend they haven’t seen for a while due to his expulsion from college during his freshman year. According to Brooke and Maya, Forbes has been employed with a tech company in California for all these years.

Upon Forbes’ arrival at the mansion, he unveils a puzzling briefcase he had brought along. Eager to engage in an evening’s entertainment, everyone in the house suggests playing a party game. The contents of the suitcase were soon to serve as their amusement for the night. He discloses that this mysterious item was the culmination of five years’ work by him and his tech company. Rather than elaborating further, he opens the briefcase to reveal the intriguing object he had spoken about.

In the luggage lies an enigmatic device filled with numerous buttons, cables, and levers. Forbes distributes a set of electrodes to each participant and instructs them to attach these to their temples. With no prior guidance given, he activates a switch, promptly causing everyone in the room to exchange physical forms. After 20 breathless seconds, he flips another switch, and everyone resumes their original bodies, leaving everyone bewildered about the extraordinary event they’ve just experienced.

In an excited tone, I share with my friends about this fascinating game we can engage in with our AI companion: Mafia. Here’s the gist – everyone temporarily swaps identities, and the challenge is to figure out who’s inhabiting whose body. To start, we all need to get a Polaroid photo of ourselves. As the game progresses, anyone can take a guess about who’s in which body at any given moment. If someone correctly identifies another player, that person’s picture gets pinned to their actual body and they lose the round. However, if a guess is incorrect, the one making it must unveil their own identity and depart from the game. It’s a thrilling experience of mystery, deduction, and self-discovery!

Maya inquires from Forbes about how one could discern if someone is falsifying their identity, to which Forbes essentially replies that he’ll recognize it because he controls the game, and he doesn’t speculate or guess. Once all questions related to the game have been addressed, Forbes activates the body-swapping machine, marking the start of the first round.

Round 1

  • Shelby is in Brooke’s body.
  • Nikki is in Maya’s body.
  • Brooke is in Shelby’s body.
  • Maya is in Nikki’s body.
  • Cyrus is in Reuben’s body.
  • Forbes is in Dennis’s body.
  • Reuben is in Cyrus’s body.
  • Dennis is in Forbes’s body.

In the initial stage, some deception is unveiled. Initially assumed to be in Dennis’s form, Cyrus actually resides within Reuben. Contrary to what Forbes claimed, he was not Cyrus but instead inhabited Dennis’s body. Forbes deceived by impersonating Cyrus. When in Reuben’s body, Cyrus challenges Forbes (in Dennis’s guise) about his dishonesty. Forbes essentially downplays the issue and explains that he was aiding Cyrus secretly so he could explore “unexplored possibilities” while occupying Reuben’s form. And indeed, Cyrus encounters an unprecedented experience!

As he investigates the house, he encounters Maya who’s currently occupying Nikki’s physical form. In their college days, Cyrus had a massive infatuation with Nikki that hasn’t seemed to fade, despite his current relationship with Shelby. Interestingly, Maya is unaware that Cyrus has taken up residence in Reuben’s body. She believes he’s Forbes, so she initiates romantic advances towards him. However, before they get too carried away, she confesses to Cyrus that she and Reuben were an item historically. This explains her comfort level with kissing his physical form, even though it isn’t actually him. Their kissing spree abruptly halts when Cyrus injures himself on some broken glass.

Later on, Cyrus notices Shelby (in Brooke’s form) speaking negatively about him to Reuben (in Cyrus’s form). This instantaneously makes him wish to abandon the game and return to his original self. The initial round has concluded, yet he wishes to skip the next one. However, Shelby successfully persuades him to continue playing. In the second phase of the game, they both agree that they will cheat by sending secret signals to each other so as to identify whose body they are occupying at any given moment.

Round 2

  • Shelby is in Nikki’s body.
  • Nikki is in Brooke’s body.
  • Brooke is in Maya’s body.
  • Maya is in Shelby’s body.
  • Cyrus is in Forbes’s body.
  • Forbes is in Reuben’s body.
  • Reuben is in Dennis’s body.
  • Dennis is in Cyrus’s body.

In this round, while inhabiting Dennis’s body, Reuben seizes the chance to fulfill his desire, which is to be intimate with Maya. Notably, they had a past relationship. However, it’s important to mention that Maya isn’t present in her own body; she’s occupying Shelby’s instead. Maya herself is not there, but Brooke, who now inhabits Maya’s body, is. Despite the fact that Maya isn’t physically present, Reuben yearns to connect with her so strongly that he initiates an intimate encounter with Brooke, who is in Maya’s body. They ascend to the rooftop of the mansion for this purpose. Unsurprisingly, Brooke also consents to this encounter as she has always held a liking for Reuben.

In the meantime, Shelby (in Nikki’s form) and Cyrus (taking over Forbes’ body) were getting close in the greenhouse. However, Cyrus felt uneasy, so they left and went back to the mansion where everyone else was gathered. Just as Cyrus was ready to disclose to everyone that Shelby had taken control of Nikki’s body, a figure fell from the roof, catching everyone’s attention. They all rushed outside to find Dennis and Maya’s lifeless bodies on the ground. This implies that Reuben and Brooke have met their demise, and Maya and Dennis are now inhabiting other people’s bodies. Spooky!

In the bodies of Brooke and Nikki, the former expresses a desire to contact the police, while the latter’s body-holder, Forbes, objects, fearing they might seize his device for swapping bodies. Forbes, now in Reuben’s body, insists that everyone return to the mansion to reverse the swap, but Dennis, currently inhabiting Forbes’s body, resists this idea. Instead, he reveals past secrets about their college days. It turns out that Dennis and Nikki were a couple back then, but Dennis betrayed her with Beatrice, Forbes’s younger sister. Upon learning of this infidelity, Cyrus informed Nikki because he harbored feelings for her, hoping to win her affection. However, she rejected him.

Stricken with heartache from being turned down, I found myself drawn towards Shelby – a connection I wasn’t entirely keen on at first. Listening to this tale unfold, Shelby (in Nikki’s form) couldn’t help but feel her own melancholy deepen. The dispute between Dennis and me only grew more intense, leading Dennis to call the police and falsely accuse me of pushing Maya and him off a rooftop. Just as things seemed bleakest, Nikki (in Brooke’s body) appeared out of the blue, seeking Forbes. In a swift turn of events, Forbes (assuming Reuben’s identity) tried to flee but was quickly apprehended by Nikki, who rendered him unconscious.

Inside the mansion, everyone prepares to switch back into their original bodies, but Shelby, occupying Nikki’s body, resists. She yearns to keep Nikki’s body and, as the only other person apart from Forbes who can operate the body-swapping device, they require her assistance. Agitated, she departs, prompting Cyrus, now in Forbes’s body, to chase after her. He pleads with her to return to her own body, but when it appears he has convinced her, Maya, occupying Shelby’s body, interferes by disclosing that they had a romantic encounter, complicating the situation.

In this scenario, Shelby visits Forbes, who’s confined in a room within the manor. He persuades her to retaliate against Cyrus and Nikki, marking the beginning of the decisive battle.

How does It’s What’s Inside end?

Round 3

  • Shelby is in her own body.
  • Nikki is in Reuben’s body.
  • Maya is in Brooke’s body.
  • Cyrus is in his own body.
  • Beatrice is in Nikki’s body.
  • Dennis is in Forbes’s body.

It comes as quite a surprise, but Beatrice actually made an appearance much later in the story. It turns out that Beatrice had secretly taken over Forbes’ body when he arrived at the party with the suitcase, which we only learn at the very end of the movie. This revelation stems from events back in college. Dennis had misled everyone by claiming he wasn’t dating Beatrice to win Nikki’s favor. He even went as far as calling her delusional. It is known that Beatrice suffered from “episodes” where she would act strangely, and the night of Reuben’s birthday party saw one of her worst episodes yet. Consequently, she was admitted to a mental hospital.

One day, Forbes pays a visit to Beatrice at the mental institution and demonstrates his bodily transformation device to her. After showing her how it operates, they exchange bodies. However, rather than exchanging back, Beatrice – now in Forbes’s body – knocks out Forbes and flees with the machine. Her motive for this action was to exact revenge on her brother and his social circle. We uncover these details when the actual Forbes (in Beatrice’s body) arrives at the mansion following the third round, coincidentally bumping into Dennis (who is in Forbes’s body). He then shares with Dennis everything that transpired.

After the last body swap, Dennis subsequently discloses to Forbes the subsequent events that unfolded for everyone involved. As Dennis explains, he was intended to inhabit Reuben’s body, but Beatrice intentionally swapped places in a manipulative manner to advantage herself and Shelby. Indeed, Beatrice colluded with Shelby, even though she hadn’t revealed her true self to him at the time.

In a peculiar turn of events, Dennis found himself inhabiting Forbes’s physical form, while Nikki took over Reuben’s. Maya wound up in Brooke’s body, but surprisingly, both Shelby and Cyrus returned to their original bodies. The question arises about Beatrice – she ended up in Nikki’s body and made off with the body-swapping machine. Furthermore, she moved the funds from Dennis’s trust fund account into an offshore account, effectively taking control of it. This was her payback. To add more drama to this tale, Cyrus is currently serving time for the murders of Maya and Dennis, and Shelby decided to end things with him once and for all.

Well, gamers, that’s a wrap on my latest adventure with “It’s What’s Inside”! Thoughts on the finale? I’m curious to hear your take on it.
