Netflix cancels hit comedy after 2 seasons but star vows to shop the show around

As a dedicated gamer with a heart for nostalgia and a soft spot for good storytelling, I must admit that the news of That ’90s Show being canceled has left me feeling like Eric Forman after a particularly bad day at work (which is to say, pretty bummed out).

If you’ve been eagerly awaiting a third season of ‘That ’90s Show’ on Netflix, I regret to inform you that there’s some very unfortunate news. Unbeknownst to many, Netflix has decided to end production of the popular show after only completing two seasons.

It was announced on October 3rd that ‘That ’90s Show’ would not be renewed for a third season, as actor Kurtwood Smith, who plays Red Forman, shared the news on his Instagram account and confirmed Netflix’s decision.

In an Instagram post, Smith announced that he regrettably must inform you that Season 3 of the series will not be released as Netflix has decided against renewal.

Although it appears that the show‘s run on Netflix has come to a close, Smith emphasized his gratitude towards fans by stating that they will be attempting to find another network for the show. Essentially, he likened their efforts to those of diligent grandparents who strive tirelessly to ensure their grandchildren graduate from high school.

I’d like to seize a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to all fans worldwide who have supported and watched our show. In every corner of the globe, you’ve approached me with kindness while traveling, and through social media, you’ve been nothing short of amazing. I’ve cherished each moment of portraying Grandpa Red for you all. As I’ve said before, this show was filled with heart and boasted an exceptional cast, writers, directors, producers, and crew that any actor would dream to work with.

While it’s not guaranteed that season 3 will occur since the show is being marketed to other networks, given its spin-off status from a widely recognized franchise, there might be competition keen on it. To clarify, the series serves as a sequel to That ‘70s Show , unfolding two decades after the original storyline concluded.

Apart from Smith, the revival series reintroduced several familiar faces from the initial show. Debra Jo Rupp portrays Kitty Forman, Laura Prepon takes on Donna Pinciotti, Topher Grace plays Eric Forman, Ashton Kutcher is Michael Kelso, Wilmer Valderrama is Fez, and Mila Kunis and Jackie Burkhart make their appearances. Moreover, it introduces a new cast focusing on the daughter of Donna and Eric who spends her summer with her grandparents Red and Kitty.

With “That ’70s Show” now available on Peacock, there’s speculation that Peacock might consider reviving the series for a third season. It seems fitting to bring the spinoff, “That ’90s Show,” back to Peacock, where it could be streamed alongside the original series. This setup could boost the show’s popularity as viewers watching the original series could easily transition to the spinoff.

We’re keeping our fingers crossed that Peacock or another network might take an interest in the show, allowing us to produce more episodes and keep the story going for fans who loved the spinoff. Since the second season ended on a nail-biting cliffhanger, we’re hoping this isn’t the final chapter for “That ’90s Show,” but we’ll have to wait and see if the show manages to find a new home or if it becomes one of those Netflix series that end prematurely.
