Despite airing for only two years, one Netflix fantasy series has quickly become a beloved classic. Netflix has created several original fantasy shows over time, and titles like Dead Boy Detectives, Wednesday, The Witcher, and The Sandman are among the platform’s most popular shows overall.
Netflix has had both big successes and noticeable failures with fantasy shows, and even its popular series sometimes struggle. For instance, The Witcher began with a lot of promise, but later seasons weren’t as well-received by critics or viewers. While a few Netflix fantasy shows are consistently good, only one truly stands out as a masterpiece.
Arcane is a show based on the popular video game League of Legends. Though it includes sci-fi aspects like time travel and advanced technology, it’s mainly a grand fantasy story. The series centers on the conflict between Piltover and Zaun, two cities locked in a class war powered by potent magic and technology known as Hextech. But the true heart of Arcane lies with sisters Vi and Powder, whose story makes the show truly unforgettable.
Despite Only Ending In 2024, Arcane Is Already A Classic Of The Fantasy Genre
It’s tough to call anything a classic right away, since truly classic shows need years to prove their staying power. However, despite finishing in 2024, Arcane feels like an instant fantasy classic. It has all the elements of a great, enduring show: a story that will resonate for years, compelling and complex characters, a detailed and interesting magic system, and a richly imagined world that feels completely real.
As a total film and TV buff, I can honestly say that Arcane is just epic. The sheer scale of the world they’ve built, combined with the complex politics and incredibly well-developed characters, really puts it in the same league as Game of Thrones – it’s an instant classic, in my opinion. While Powder and Vi are at the heart of the story, what’s amazing is how every single character feels so real, so emotional, and honestly, so tragically beautiful. It creates this world that feels both huge and unbelievably personal, which is a rare feat.
I’m completely captivated by Arcane. It has everything I love about fantasy – compelling characters, a rich world – but it’s truly special. The animation is just… breathtaking. Seriously, every single scene is gorgeous, and the action is so smooth and powerful, it feels like nothing I’ve ever seen in live-action. It’s a visual masterpiece, plain and simple. What’s even more amazing is that I think Arcane will hold up incredibly well over time. So many shows start to look dated, especially with special effects, but this animation feels timeless – it’ll be as stunning thirty years from now as it is today.
Only One Other Fantasy Series On Streaming Comes Close To Arcane
Besides Arcane, The Legend of Vox Machina on Prime Video is one of the few streaming-exclusive fantasy shows that matches its quality. Both series are beautifully animated with fantastic voice acting and exciting action. They also share a large, diverse cast of characters and a detailed, immersive fantasy world with its own unique magic system.
What makes Vox Machina special is that it’s based on a Dungeons & Dragons game played by the creators of Critical Role. Because of this, the characters are remarkably well-developed, with rich histories, strong connections, and believable relationships. This depth makes the show’s story and world feel incredibly immersive and realistic, something rarely seen in fantasy television.
Predicting The “Next Arcane” And Which Platform It’ll Be On
The biggest disappointment with Arcane is simply that it’s finished. Although more adaptations of League of Legends are planned, they won’t continue Arcane’s story, and we can’t be sure we’ll see those same beloved characters again. Fortunately, there’s a new fantasy show coming out that could be just as good: God of War on Prime Video, and fans of the genre should definitely keep an eye on it.
Similar to the show Arcane, God of War is based on a popular fantasy video game. The series centers on Kratos, a former Greek god of war, and his son, Atreus. Together, they embark on a journey to honor Kratos’s deceased wife by scattering her ashes from a mountaintop, facing off against Norse gods and grappling with Kratos’s violent history along the way.
The God of War series has a lot of potential to become as popular as Arcane. The original games have a fantastic, well-loved story, and the idea of a Greek god battling Norse gods is a really compelling premise for a fantasy show. Plus, Kratos has amazing weapons and powers—like his fiery blades and ice axe—which promise some truly spectacular fight scenes. If you enjoyed Arcane or are a fan of fantasy, God of War is definitely worth checking out.
