Scott Bakula says it was a great privilege to play Captain Jonathan Archer
As a passionate Star Trek: Enterprise fan, I wholeheartedly appreciate Scott Bakula’s portrayal of Captain Jonathan Archer. Though the series had its trials and tribulations, it was an extraordinary journey that left a lasting impact on me, much like the Enterprise itself.
Actor Scott Bakula portrayed Captain Jonathan Archer, the inaugural commander of the starship Enterprise, across four seasons of Star Trek: Enterprise. Despite his brief tenure, a dedicated fanbase remains loyal to both the series and Captain Archer. Previously reserved about his Star Trek experiences, Bakula has lately been more vocal on the topic, as evidenced by a recent interview with The Guardian (as reported by Trekmovie).
It was a blast. It was a great privilege. The icing on the cake is to get to know [William] Shatner and Patrick [Stewart] and and Kate [Mulgrew] and everybody. They’re all really fun and different people. There’s a burden in that sci-fi fans have a very high standard. If they don’t like you then it’s not good but when they do embrace you, it’s a lovely marriage.
The initial theme tune and pilot episode of this series didn’t fare well, resulting in a loss of viewers. As time went on and new seasons were released, viewership decreased further until eventually, the show was terminated, leaving its followers disappointed with the ending.
There were a lot of challenges with it. We had a theme song that was different and some people hated that. I had a dog and some people hated that. People are very possessive about their their experiences within sci-fi and they like a certain captain or they like a certain Doctor Who. ‘I don’t like that Doctor Who, the next person I don’t like, I’m not gonna watch it,’ whatever. You have to be willing to tough some of that stuff out but overall that was another great experience and continues to this day.
In any new Star Trek series, there are numerous hurdles, as demonstrated by the current Trek era. Numerous fans have expressed displeasure over changes to what they’ve been familiar with for more than five decades. For some, Star Trek: The Next Generation serves as a benchmark, and deviations from this format were met with resistance.
Luckily, there has been an increase in people watching Enterprise through streaming services, leading to a loyal fanbase. Additionally, with Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating hosting The D-Con Chamber Podcast, the series remains relevant and attracts even more viewers who can enjoy it.
Fervent followers are yearning for additional tributes to the series and chances to revisit these characters, preferably through animation. For a considerable period, Star Trek: Enterprise has been absent from the current era, but it’s high time to reinstate these Starfleet crew members, including Dr. Phlox and T’Pol, into the cosmos. Despite the numerous hardships the series’ cast encountered, they deserve far greater acclaim for persevering through adversity.
