Ridley Scott’s sci-fi film slingshots its way back onto the streaming charts.
The celebrated director became famous for groundbreaking science fiction films like Alien (1979) and Blade Runner (1982). Years later, he revisited the Alien universe with the movies Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017). Now, another one of his sci-fi films is gaining popularity on streaming services.
Ridley Scott’s 2015 film, The Martian, is trending again on streaming services, more than ten years after it first came out. Based on the 2011 novel by Andy Weir and adapted for the screen by Drew Goddard, the movie tells the story of an astronaut stranded on Mars who relies on his ingenuity to survive and signal for help.
As of today, April 20th, The Martian is currently the 14th most popular movie on the Apple TV Store in the United States. It’s behind films like Avatar: Fire and Ash at number one, as well as Reminders of Him, The Housemaid, GOAT, Undertone, Send Help, Shelter, Marty Supreme, Greenland 2: Migration, the 2025 version of Dracula, Scream 7, and Cold Storage.
This film is now considered better than movies like The Dark Knight, Avatar, Jumanji: The Next Level, The Matrix, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Brothers Under Fire, Ocean’s Eleven, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, and Blade Runner.
Matt Damon leads an impressive cast in this film, joined by Academy Award winner Jessica Chastain and nominees Chiwetel Ejiofor (known for 12 Years a Slave), Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids), and Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice). Also starring are Emmy winners Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom) and Donald Glover (Atlanta), along with Emmy nominees Kate Mara (House of Cards) and Nick Mohammed (Ted Lasso), plus Michael Peña, Sean Bean, and Mackenzie Davis.
The science fiction movie has been a hit with critics, earning a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers have described it as smart, thrilling, and surprisingly humorous, and have applauded its faithfulness to the original book. Performances by Matt Damon and Ridley Scott were also particularly praised.
The film earned $630.6 million globally, making it the tenth-highest-grossing movie of 2015 and the most successful film directed by Ridley Scott so far. Many publications included it in their top 10 films of the year, and it received seven Academy Award nominations, including nods for Best Picture, Matt Damon for Best Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay written by Drew Goddard.
Interest in the film The Martian is growing again on streaming services, likely due to the recent release of Project Hail Mary in March. Both films are based on novels by the same author, Andy Weir, and were adapted for the screen by Drew Goddard. Project Hail Mary has been a critical and commercial success, earning $573 million worldwide and becoming the third-highest-grossing film of 2026 so far.
