Inside Holly Willoughby's comeback: Why her red carpet appearance was such a 'big thing', friends tell KATIE HIND - as they reveal what's next after kidnap ordeal and Schofield scandal

As a journalist who has followed Holly Willoughby’s career for years, I must say it’s been both heart-wrenching and inspiring to witness her resilience in the face of adversity. The events that unfolded last October were undoubtedly terrifying, but Holly’s strength and courage throughout this ordeal are truly admirable.

After her harrowing kidnapping ordeal, it was a warm smile that conveyed the news to the world that Holly Willoughby had returned to work again.

Wearing a sleek, metallic gown, the beloved figure of television, who had been mostly absent for a year, smiled brightly upon her return to public events, following the imprisonment of the individual who had planned an assault and attempted murder against her back in July.

Indeed, Holly’s presence at the National Television Awards came as quite an unexpected treat this year. Previously a regular attendee with her ex-co-host Phillip Schofield, they would usually grace the event with their presence to collect awards and carry on partying until late at night. However, this year she was not nominated for an award, and her attendance wasn’t announced beforehand. But as she stepped out at London’s O2 Arena, greeting fans who braved the chilly evening to catch a glimpse of her and posing for photographers, her smile suggested sheer joy at being back.

Could we consider another interpretation for her sudden stage appearance? Some TV insiders are suggesting that this could be an attempt by her to reclaim a sense of normalcy, following the harrowing ordeal she endured due to stalker Gavin Plumb, a previous security staff member.

Holly’s response wasn’t carefully prepared in advance. However, once she accepted the offer to present an award, she made sure to look the part, with her glamour team’s assistance. Her stylist Dannii Whiteman procured her stunning £30,000 gown from Kolchagov Barba, a high-end label that has also adorned Kylie Minogue.

It came as a surprise that evening, but it seems significant that the host chose to return to the spotlight so abruptly, as she navigates her life’s rebuilding phase after her recent hardships, according to those close to her.

One shared with me that it represented a significant advancement for Holly. It was essentially taking the next action towards regaining some semblance of normalcy following the court case.

Each step proves challenging for her – tasks that were once second nature have become more demanding, yet she perseveres and continues to make progress.

This action signified a significant stride ahead. Attending the NTAs seemed as instinctive to her as routine activities such as shopping or going to work once were. It was a resounding success. Now, she feels like she’s regained control over her life.

Initially, what belonged to her was seized upon learning about the abduction plan. Gradually, she’s regaining a semblance of normality. The event was uneventful: Holly visited, interacted with her cherished followers, and enjoyed an enjoyable evening.

Without a doubt, Holly was overjoyed to reunite with friends she hadn’t seen in ages. Among them were Davina McCall, along with her old co-stars from This Morning like Alison Hammond, TV host and singer Rochelle Humes, presenters Dermot O’Leary, and Craig Doyle.

After Plumb’s arrest and her exit from This Morning in October last year, Holly found it hard to leave her London home initially, opting to spend time with her family and a tight-knit group of friends rather than reaching out to others.

One source near the ex-daytime television celebrity stated, ‘The team reunited,’ they reported. Just glance at her photos, and you’ll notice her evident joy being with her friends once more. She thoroughly enjoyed reminiscing and reconnecting with them.

In the past, she frequently encountered them, especially those from ‘This Morning’, and almost every day, so their meeting again was delightful.

As I’ve stepped away from my daily TV gig, I’ve eased myself back into the world of work. I’m thrilled to be reunited with my partner-in-crime Stephen Mulhern on ITV’s Dancing On Ice once more. I’ve also dived headfirst into the exciting realm of Netflix reality competitions, hosting Bear Hunt. Most recently, I’ve found myself back in the hot seat for a fresh take on the classic game show, You Bet!

After Plumb’s conviction and sentencing to life in prison with a minimum of 15 years, Holly took a summer vacation with her family. Accompanied by her husband Dan Baldwin and their children, Harry (age 15), Belle (age 13), and Chester (age 9), they traveled to Portugal. There, they spent several weeks recovering from the emotional trial that had impacted everyone in the family.

‘It’s been a tough summer,’ says one source.

Currently, Holly finds comfort knowing Plumb is imprisoned, but the incident seems poised to alter her life irrevocably.

The events unfolded when a knock came at her front door in October, coincidentally happening only a few weeks following her trip to the NTAs.

On her doorstep stood policemen who informed her that only a few hours ago, they had thwarted Plumb’s plan to abduct, sexually assault, and kill her.

She was ‘numb’ and ‘dumbfounded’ at the revelation but, most of all, was ‘truly terrified’.

According to my sources, as the police conversed with her, having TV executive Dan by her side, it was reported that Holly became extremely distraught, or put another way, she found herself in a very upsetting condition.

In the course of my dedication, it was later disclosed in court that I, being an ardent admirer weighing around 30 stones, had amassed a troubling collection intended for Holly’s abduction. This assemblage included a chloroform restraint set, handcuffs, cable ties, and ball gags.

The gruesome details of his plot revealed at the trial shook Holly immeasurably.

After abducting her, his intention was to transport her to a secluded equestrian facility for acts of sexual violence, followed by her murder and disposal of the remains in a lake.

According to my friend, it appeared suddenly and without explanation, leaving one quite bewildered. It’s a type of event that leaves you feeling shaky. Imagine its impact on her – she went from planning to start her day by hosting This Morning, to being so frightened she couldn’t even go to work the next day.

For the first time since then, she was publicly seen in late December, having lunch with her family close to her residence.

Meanwhile, Holly has chosen to avoid attending high-profile events like the red carpet. The last such event she attended was at the NTAs last year, following the public scandal involving “This Morning”. On that particular night, with Schofield, her longtime co-presenter, in a state of turmoil – he had admitted to an affair with a younger colleague on the show – Holly appeared visibly stressed and was working hard behind the scenes to salvage the troubled program.

In just a few short weeks, she found herself learning about the Plumb conspiracy, causing the Schofield predicament to essentially slip from focus as she struggled to grasp the danger looming over her.

Small wonder friends were so thrilled to see her smile on Wednesday night.

One remarked yesterday, ‘It felt incredibly distinct.’ It seemed as if Holly had moved light-years away from the turmoil. Bit by bit, she’s making progress, and her smile has returned. It’s truly heartening to witness such a transformation.
