Former Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips claims show is now more competitive as contestants are ‘getting dance lessons before starting’
As I delve into the world of Strictly Come Dancing, I find myself captivated by the vibrant energy and resilience that emanates from each dancer. The story of Amy Dowden, for instance, is one that resonates deeply with me. Having faced challenges in my own life, I can only admire her strength and determination to return to the dance floor after a diagnosis of breast cancer.
Previously known judge on Strictly Come Dancing, Arlene Phillips, asserted that the competition in the popular dance show has become tougher due to some participants allegedly receiving dance training prior to its commencement.
Arlene, aged 81, initially joined the judging team of Strictly for a period of four years. During her tenure, she sat alongside Craig Revel Horwood, Bruno Tonioli, and Len Goodman on the panel.
Now she has claimed that the show has changed from compared to her time on the show.
She mentioned that a larger number of participants prioritize success, and celebrities learn about their role within the program.
She mentioned that it becomes increasingly challenging for Strictly, as more people learn about their participation in the show earlier and earlier throughout the year.
Initially, during my tenure, there were no instances of individuals venturing outside for additional tutoring or lessons with teachers to gain an advantage. Such occurrences simply did not materialize back then. Instead, people would arrive, and that essentially concluded the story.
On the How to be 60 podcast, Arlene told Kaye Adams that now she finds it a tougher spot. The stakes for victory seem incredibly high.
It seems that previously, there were individuals who were unwaveringly committed to triumphing and helping their partners do the same. However, currently, the atmosphere is more intense and passionate, as if everyone is eagerly saying, “Let’s charge ahead! Let’s battle for it!”

The first live show will take place the following week, on September 21.

Pete Wicks had a relaxed demeanor as he teamed up with the other contestants for a day of preparations and shooting.
Previously known as a cast member on TOWIE, the individual aged 36, opted for a casual outfit that included gray pants splattered with paint, a white undershirt, and a jacket in a shade slightly darker than black made of leather.
He covered his eyes with a pair of brown sun glasses as he carried along a silver suitcase and a black and grey duffel bag out of the London hotel.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I myself was spotted stepping out of a vehicle recently, clad in an all-black ensemble accented by a vibrant neon pink jacket casually draped around my waist.
The presenter went make-up free to greet the stars ahead of the competition.
With a cheerful grin, Dr. Punam Krishan exited, dressed casually in a set of black leggings, a roomy T-shirt, and a comfortable light denim jacket.
As she walked alongside her fellow actors, the TV host and general practitioner held a spacious beige bag slung across her shoulder.
In another location, Aljaž Škorjanec appeared cheerful upon his arrival at the Paris Olympics, giving a thumbs-up to photographers while donning his white hotel slippers and making his way to the car.
For several months, the main program on BBC has faced accusations of bullying and mistreatment from past professionals, Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima, towards their celebrity partners, Amanda Abbington and Zara McDermott, respectively.
An inquiry initiated by the BBC ensued after ex-participant Amanda levied accusations against Giovanni. However, the findings of this investigation have not been disclosed publicly as yet. Nevertheless, Giovanni denies these accusations.
Fellow dancer Graziano has also left the show.
This year’s lineup will feature some familiar faces, such as Vito Coppola (last year’s champion), Dianne Buswell, Nadiya Bychkova, Karen Hauer, Neil Jones, Katya Jones, and Nikita Kuzmin.
Gorka Marquez, Luba Mushtuk, Jowita Przystal, Johannes Radebe, Nancy Xu, Carlos Gu, Lauren Oakley, and Michelle Tsiakkas are all included in the group.
In May 2023, Amy Dowden was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to take a break from the show. However, she is now back after discovering a lump the day before her honeymoon, which prevented her from participating in that year’s series of Strictly with a celebrity partner.
In February, the 34-year-old revealed her plans to rejoin the show this year, as medical examinations confirmed she had no signs of illness post her mastectomy and chemotherapy treatments.
For the debut performance of Strictly’s 20th anniversary season, dancers will showcase a powerful dance number in honor of Amy’s comeback. Additionally, this event will mark the assignment of celebrity participants to their dancing companions.
