The creator of The Night Manager has discussed concerns as a new season of the Tom Hiddleston spy series is confirmed. While there was a decade-long wait between the first two seasons, viewers won’t have to wait nearly as long for the third.
So, I was listening to the Contenders TV panel, and the creator of the show, David Farr, said they’re already making good progress on season three! He did admit it’s a little intimidating to think about, but things are moving along nicely.
He admitted feeling overwhelmed by the task, explaining with a chuckle, “It’s just a lot of pressure because I’m the one who has to write it.”

This will be a big undertaking, but it’s going to be really exciting! Plus, I’m confident we can finish it much faster than the previous project.
He said the delay for season 2 happened for two main reasons: the first season was a much bigger hit than anyone expected, and they ran out of original material to work from.

Farr explained that they never planned a sequel, feeling it wasn’t right to ask a celebrated author like John le Carré to repeat the process. However, the first installment was so successful and le Carré surprisingly agreed to continue, they realized they needed time to develop a proper story. They hadn’t done any preparation beforehand, and quality work simply takes time.
He described having a sudden, clear inspiration one night. This idea – the character of Teddy Dos Santos – allowed him to develop both the spy elements and the family relationships in the story.

Farr shared that season 3 will explore the fallout from the dramatic events that concluded season 2.
He explained it mattered to everyone involved because of the difficulties people are facing right now, and they felt it was important to acknowledge that reality.
Look, we all play games for a reason, right? We want to see good triumph, characters grow, and the world actually change because of our actions. That’s why I think season 3 is so important – there’s a real need to deliver on that promise and give players a story that feels meaningful and impactful. It’s not just about fun, it’s about doing the story justice.
The Night Manager seasons 1 and 2 can be streamed on BBC iPlayer.
