Sigourney Weaver says she would "consider" doing another Alien movie

As a long-time fan of the Alien franchise, I must say that the release of Alien: Romulus this year was like a dream come true! The thrill and anticipation leading up to its release were palpable, and it didn’t disappoint. The movie has become one of the highest-grossing horror films of 2024, which just goes to show that Ridley Scott’s creation is still as terrifying and captivating as ever.

This summer, one of the year’s most eagerly awaited horror flicks, “Alien: Romulus,” premiered in cinemas on August 16, and a multitude of fans flocked to theaters to catch it. The movie turned out to be a box office sensation, earning $229 million globally while being produced with a budget of just $80 million. Intriguingly, it’s now among the top-earning horror films of 2024.

Ever since its debut, it’s sparked quite a buzz among folks who can’t help but speculate if another edition might be coming up. Regrettably, there isn’t one currently underway, but director Fede Álvarez of “Alien: Romulus” has already been brainstorming concepts for a possible follow-up. In essence, progress seems to be on track!

Discussions about the upcoming film “Alien: Romulus” inevitably lead people to ponder if Sigourney Weaver, the iconic star of the “Alien” franchise, might reprise her role as Ellen Ripley in a future movie. Now, Weaver herself has shared her thoughts on this matter in an interview with Deadline, giving fans some insight into her possible involvement in a new “Alien” film.

As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: Sigourney Weaver has shared with Deadline that the idea of a new Alien movie focused on Ripley has popped up a few times, but her schedule is filled with other projects right now. Yet, she didn’t completely rule out the possibility of reprising her role and hinted that if presented with an exciting script, she might give it a thought. Until then, Weaver believes her character Ripley deserves some peace and relaxation, which means we probably won’t see a new Alien movie featuring Ripley in the near future.

I feel like she’s never far away from me, but on the other hand I have yet to read a script that said “you have got to do this.” So for me, she is in this other dimension, safe from the Alien for the time being. I don’t really think about it, but you know, it’s not completely impossible, and certainly a lot of good filmmakers are inspired by the material.

How much does the public really need or want another Ripley movie? I don’t really sit around and think about it, but if it came up, I would consider it. It has come up a bunch of times, but I’m also busy doing other things. Ripley has earned her rest.

Sigourney Weaver

Sigourney Weaver portrayed Ripley in the films Alien (1979), Aliens (1986), Alien 3 (1992), and Alien Resurrection (1997). In the first three movies, she played a human character, but for Alien Resurrection, she took on the role of a Ripley clone. She was set to reprise her role again in a potential fifth Alien movie, directed by Neill Blomkamp, but unfortunately, that project never materialized. Instead, another film titled Prometheus (2012) was produced, which served as a prequel to the Alien series and neither Weaver nor Blomkamp were part of it.

At the moment, let’s anticipate what other projects Zoe Weaver has in store for us. In the near future, you can catch her in the movies “Avatar: Fire and Ash”, “Avatar 4”, “Avatar 5”, “The Gorge”, “Dust Bunny”, and “The Mandalorian & Grogu”.
