The Rings of Power season 1 ending, explained, and what you need to remember before season 2

As a dedicated fan who has delved deep into the lore of Middle-earth for years, I can confidently say that the first season of “The Rings of Power” was nothing short of a thrilling journey through J.R.R Tolkien’s enchanting world. The cliffhangers and plot twists have left me eagerly anticipating the upcoming season 2.

It’s been two years now since the first season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” wrapped up on Prime Video. Since then, we’ve likely watched an overwhelming amount of TV, making our minds a tangle of storylines, characters, and details related to the finale of that particular series.

Hey fellow gamers! Just wanted to remind you all about some key takeaways ahead of diving back into the epic world of “The Rings of Power” this coming Thursday, August 29th. Stay tuned for an unforgettable adventure!

The Rings of Power season 1 recap

Amazon provided a summary of key events from season 1 of “The Rings of Power”. This serves as a refresher for some of the significant moments that unfolded during the first season.

As we embark on season 2, let’s refresh our memories about Galadriel’s (Morfydd Clark) journey so far and where it leads us. Initially in the season, Galadriel harbored doubts about Sauron’s alleged demise. In her quest to find him, she traverses vast territories but fails to locate him. Eventually, Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker) suspects that Galadriel might be sustaining Sauron’s aura and his wickedness through her unyielding thirst for vengeance. This suspicion leads her to depart Middle-earth for the Undying Lands. However, just before reaching her destination, she leaps from the ship in the midst of the sea, encounters Halbrand (Charlie Vickers), who presents himself as the King of the Southlands, and this is where the narrative takes a new turn.

Galadriel guided Míriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), Elendil (Lloyd Owen), Isildur (Maxim Baldry), and the Numenoreans towards the Southlands, where Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova) had been helping the locals resist Adar’s orc army. It seemed for a brief moment that Galadriel was successful in capturing Adar. However, the sad news is that just as they captured him, it was already too late. Regrettably, for the people of the Southlands, Waldreg (Geoff Morrell) utilized the treasured sword to breach a dam, triggering an eruption at Mount Doom – a move orchestrated by Adar as part of his grand scheme to create a habitable land for the orcs.

In the explosion, Halbrand seems to have been hurt, causing Galadriel to travel to Eregion where Celebrimbor, portrayed by Charles Edwards, resides. This region is also home to a remarkable forge, hinting at future events that we’re familiar with.

Additionally, we find Prince Durin (Owain Arthur) and the dwarves excavating excessively deep into the ground to extract mithril, a significant element in the upcoming season 2.

Apart from Nori (Markella Kavenagh) and the Harfoots, we’ll delve into their storylines this season. They encounter and aid an enigmatic figure, referred to as The Stranger (Daniel Weyman). Could he be Sauron, or perhaps Gandalf, or even a different wizard? At present, it remains uncertain; however, the clues seem to lean more towards Gandalf.

Now, let’s talk about a few of the big moments that fans need to remember heading into season 2!

Halbrand is Sauron

For most of the first season, it remained a mystery as to who Halbrand truly was. However, in the final episode, it’s revealed that Halbrand is none other than Sauron. As the story unfolds, we see Sauron using his powers to deceive Celebrimbor into crafting the three rings for the Elves in Eregion. Galadriel becomes suspicious and attempts to thwart Halbrand once she realizes that his claim to be a King of the Southlands and his family crest are false.

He flees to Mordor, which is newly created by Adar, the orcs, and the low-born men loyal to the cause. More on that in a second!

As you prepare for season 2, it’s crucial to understand that Galadriel, Elrond (played by Robert Aramayo), the High King of the Ñoldor, Gil-galad, and the elves will be aware that Halbrand is indeed Sauron, and they suspect he has some sinister plan in motion.

In the climax of their first season, Elrond, Celebrimbor, and Galadriel collaborate to craft three enchanted rings: Vilya, Narya, and Nenya. These magical artifacts were forged with the intention of temporarily preventing the decline and possible extinction of the Elven race.

In essence, what impact can we anticipate for “The Rings of Power” season 2? This is a question that’s been buzzing around! Given that more rings are yet to be created, and considering the final scenes of Sauron in the previous season, it appears he is heading towards the newly established Mordor. It will surely be intriguing to observe how his grand strategy unfolds in season 2.

Nori and the Stranger leave for Rhûn

In the final episode of the first season, Nori makes the decision to part ways with the Harfoots and embarks on a journey alongside the enigmatic figure known as the Stranger. This mysterious character, who can be categorized as an Istar or wizard, collaborates with Nori in the battle against Sauron’s minions during the season finale. However, come the new season, she chooses not to allow the Stranger to continue his journey independently.

In her decision-making process, Nori resolves to assist the Mysterious One in locating Rhûn. She hopes this journey will provide him with the solutions needed to reclaim his powers, discover his identity, and comprehend the purpose behind his presence as well as his role in upcoming trials.

Elendil and Míriel return to Númenor

Following the explosion of Mount Doom, Míriel suffers permanent blindness. In the aftermath, she instructs Elendil and the Numenoreans to depart from the Southlands and Middle-earth, returning to their homeland. They decide to leave Isildur and other men behind, but it’s evident that not all of them perished. Some endured, with Isildur among them – a key figure in the upcoming battles and tales.

Upon their arrival home, they discover that King Tar-Palantir of Númenor has passed away. Elendil spots dark flags at the harbor and shares this news with Miriel, though we’re not privy to the exact details. However, it’s clear from these events that something significant has transpired.

The entire season has been gradually leading up to Trystan Gravelle’s decisive action, and with Miriel’s downfall and the King’s demise, it seems he may seize this opportunity.

King Durin scolds Prince Durin for going against his wishes

One of the larger storylines involving the elves is that their time on Middle-earth is coming to an end. We’ve mentioned it a few times here, but Elrond ventures to the realm of the Dwarves to ask for aid. Prince Durin, his friend, offers that aid in the name of Mithril, which King Durin (Peter Mullan) refuses to give the elves access to. Prince Durin and Disa (Sophia Nomvete) go behind the King’s back to work with Elrond and show him the mithril, which Elrond believes could help stave off whatever blight is killing the trees in Lindon.

We see the Mithril used to build the three rings for the elves, but before that, King Durin basically scolds his son for not listening to him.

In the initial series, that’s where our journey with the dwarves concludes, but judging from the previews, it seems there are many exciting developments in store for these characters in the upcoming season.

That’s basically all you need to remember heading into The Rings of Power season 2!
