Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is officially underway but when can we expect it?

As a dedicated Star Trek fan who’s been beaming through the cosmos for over three decades, the announcement of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has sent me into orbit! The anticipation is palpable, and I can hardly contain my excitement as I eagerly await the debut of this new series.

Production on “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” has commenced as confirmed by Star Trek’s official site, accompanied by a cast image that appears to include everyone except Tig Notaro. A second photograph of the team was also shared, showing them gathered in front of the Star Trek Studios sound stage.

In a formal announcement, The dot com revealed the talented lineup for their latest series. Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diane, Zoe Steiner, and Sandro Rosta complete the youthful cast. Meanwhile, Holly Hunter has been selected to play both the chancellor and captain of the academy.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to announce that Robert Picardo (The Doctor) and Tig Notaro (Jett Reno) are returning to their respective roles in permanent positions, much like myself who always eagerly anticipates the next episode! Additionally, Oded Fehr and Mary Wiseman, famously known from Star Trek: Discovery, will grace us with guest appearances as their previously adored characters. I can hardly wait for this exciting new chapter!

Among the ensemble, Gina Yashere is expected to portray a character of teaching nature, while Paul Giamatti will take on the role as the initial antagonist. However, with the main characters identified, let’s discuss the timing – when can fans anticipate seeing this show unfold? Given the buzz surrounding it, eager viewers may wonder about its release date.

Based on the pattern set by previous series like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, there’s a strong possibility we might see its second season as early as next summer, considering the first season was released approximately nine months after production began in August 2021.

If we follow Strange New Worlds’ typical nine-month production timeline and begin filming in late August this year, we can anticipate a mid-May 2025 release date as our estimate. However, Discovery bucked this trend with a significantly quicker seven-month turnaround between the start of its filming in January 2017 and the release of its first episode in September of the same year.

Picard saw production begin on April 22, 2019 and the first episode debuted on Jan. 23, 2020.

As a passionate Star Trek fan, I can confidently say that based on past production timelines, which typically range from seven to nine months for live-action shows, we might be looking at a May release – under normal circumstances, of course.
