Oliver Hermanus directs this film, The History of Sound, which Ben Shattuck adapted from his own short stories. It centers on Lionel, a gifted music student played by Mescal, and his classmate David, portrayed by O’Connor, as they connect through their shared passion for folk music.

In the film, written and directed by Scott Cooper, actor Zach White plays Bruce Springsteen while he’s working on his 1982 album, Nebraska. This album would later be considered by many to be Springsteen’s most important work.
