The Boys season-4 finale made a major error

As a long-time fan of The Boys, I’ve grown to love the complex characters and their heart-wrenching storylines. Kimiko, or The Female, has always been one of my favorites with her unique abilities and quiet strength. But in this latest season, I couldn’t help but feel frustrated and disappointed by the way her character was written.

Despite the challenges posed at the beginning of the season, The Boys ingeniously brought back to life the gory elements and intricate plotlines that once seemed unattainable. Amidst the series’ unexpected deaths and shocking turns of events, however, they dropped the ball on developing a key character’s significant storyline.

In the final episode of season four, Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) appeared to be on a quiet and introspective path to healing throughout the series. It seemed that this journey would culminate in a powerful, emotionally satisfying climax. However, instead, her anticipated moment of resolution resulted in a less significant dramatic scene. Let’s go back and discuss what transpired in “The Boy’s” season-four finale.

The Boys season 4 ending explained

To put it simply, we’ll skip over some unpleasant scenes involving Hughie and other less significant events, and move straight to the main action.

Antony Starr, portrayed as Homelander, aimed to propel Claudia Doumit’s character, Victoria Neuman, toward the presidency with a swift advancement in politics. However, his assassination attempt on Jim Beaver’s Robert Singer didn’t go according to plan, and tragically, Neuman met her end at the hands of Karl Urban’s Butcher instead.

While this may have looked like a win for The Boys, it was anything but.

Near the finale, Neuman was making amends for past mistakes. After being exposed by Homelander with no other choice but to comply with his new regime, the once composed and unyielding Neuman became frantic and sought assistance from Hughie (Jack Quaid).

She admitted to being scared and wanting out of her arrangement with Homelander.

Neuman successfully convinced Hughie to assist her and her daughter Zoe (Olivia Morandin) in going into hiding, escaping both Homelander’s pursuit and that of the CIA.

Hughie’s heartfelt speech about forgiveness successfully convinced most of the team members. However, Butcher wasn’t there to listen. Regardless, it’s unlikely that Hughie’s motivating message would have softened Butcher’s hardened and corrupt disposition, figuratively speaking: Butcher has undergone a deep corruption.

As Hughie worked on initiating peace negotiations, Butcher, who was gravely ill and nearing the end of his life, made similar efforts towards Ryan (Cameron Crovetti). The timing was perfect as Ryan received a text message from Butcher, encouraging his late son to visit him before it was too late.

At the unusual medical center, Ryan encountered Grace (Laila Robins). Shortly after, Grace urged Ryan to leave with her for safety.

Although Ryan had disagreed with Homelander, he shared with them that he was hesitant about leaving Vought due to its appealing aspects.

A calm and surprisingly emotional butcher, named Butcher, recalled a promise he had made to his mother Rebecca to protect Ryan. He reassured Ryan, “I won’t hinder you if your safest place is with Homelander, even if it makes Grace uneasy.”

After discovering an assassination plot against Singer, Grace urged Ryan to act swiftly. She wasn’t confident that the super-virus would eliminate Homelander, so she believed it was essential for Ryan to know the full story.

Grace revealed shocking information about Homelander, beginning with her disclosure that Flight 37’s destruction and Singer’s assassination attempt were ordered by him. The climax of her revelations unveiled the disturbing truth behind Ryan’s birth, which was a result of rape. Butcher’s lack of response served to underscore the validity of Grace’s claims.

Later on, Grace revealed to Ryan that it was his responsibility to halt Homelander’s actions – this disclosure left Ryan with a profound sense of dread.

She gave her word to prepare him and get him ready for future events, but the adolescent superhero felt uneasy and powerless once he discovered they were hiding in a secure facility meant to contain supers similar to him.

I felt trapped and controlled by Grace and Butcher, as if they were trying to force me into becoming their weapon against my will. This situation reminded me of Homelander’s disturbing upbringing, but Butcher fiercely objected to the comparison.

I attempted to reach out to Ryan by expressing my feelings for him and making it clear that our relationship was non-negotiable.

Alas, he did.

As Grace moved to activate the containment system for Ryan, he shockingly shoved her against the wall with immense power, resulting in her immediate demise. A sinister expression flickered over Ryan’s face as he glanced towards Butcher before departing, implying that Ryan was beyond saving.

He had to yield to Lenny’s control, who represented a more corrupt and Compound-V-infused version of himself. By giving in, he also succumbed to the influence of the Compound-V he had taken before as a means to counteract the lethal impact of Temp-V.

In a gruesome display, Butcher brutally sliced through Neuman, making him seem as if his bones were made of brittle breadsticks. His abilities resembled those of Ben from “Umbrella Academy,” featuring protruding veins and tentacle-like structures bursting forth from his chest.

neither the Blood-stained Boys nor Zoe responded or intervened as he obtained the deadly virus, understanding that their intervention would result in their own demise.

During this time, Sister Sage skillfully arranged matters to benefit Homelander. By accusing Robert Singer of orchestrating Neuman’s death through The Boys, she managed to eliminate several threats at once.

I’ve spent years covering crime scenes and investigations as a journalist, and let me tell you, the arrest of Singer was a turning point in the case that left everyone stunned. The news of a manhunt for the Boys sent chills down my spine, as the duo were known for their dangerous antics and resistance to authority. But just when we thought things couldn’t get any more chaotic, Neuman went missing. It was a relief to some, but I couldn’t help but feel uneasy. With Neuman out of the picture, a much more pliable puppet took his place – someone who would bend to the will of those in power and make for an easier target in their investigation. The implications were far-reaching, and it was clear that this chapter in our city’s story was far from over.

Senator Calhoun, in particular, was very open and agreeable, as demonstrated in our live interview.

As your new president, I confidently announced that my very first decision would be to impose martial law and enlist hundreds of Supes across the country. These newly appointed enforcers would answer only to Homelander and me.

Homelander then cut Calhoun off mid-sentence to firm up his vendetta against the Boys.

As a seasoned investigator with decades of experience under my belt, I can tell you that the confirmation I received was chilling. Neuman, an innocent man, had been taken from us in the most heinous way possible – murdered. But what made this case unique was not just the heinousness of the crime, but the identity of those behind it: the Boys, or as some call them, the deep state Starlighters embedded within our government.

He made a threatening statement, “I’ll be there for you.” His eyes gleamed ominously at that moment. It was this very situation that led to Kimiko’s downfall.

How the Boys season 4 finale fails Kimiko

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t ignore the issue of Kimiko’s intriguing storyline being mishandled without mentioning her emotional conversation with Frenchie in episode seven first. It was a pivotal moment that left a deep impact on me and added depth to their relationship.

In their conversation, Kimiko revealed the real reason for her speech impairment, which wasn’t caused by witnessing her parents’ deaths.

When young Kimiko was kidnapped and taken to a harsh camp, she underwent grueling training at the hands of her captors. Forced into brutal combat with other trafficked girls, they were instructed not to make a sound during their fights – a rule that often meant the difference between life and death. The first girl to utter a cry was considered defeated. Kimiko overcame her opponents time and again, starting from the very beginning of her ordeal. It was the anguish she felt after her initial victory that left her mute with trauma.

I couldn’t get enough of this little game we played, and with each passing day, Kimko seemed to master it even more impressively. Yet, as my prowess grew, so did the weight of my regret.

In that instant, I took her life silently. Later on, when given the chance to communicate once more, I found myself speechless before Frenchie (Tomer Capone).

As someone who has struggled with the weight of a dark past, I can relate to the desperation and longing for absolution that both characters in this scenario must feel. The burden of their murderous actions looms heavy over them, casting an ominous shadow on their present lives. They search for a way out, a path towards redemption, but find none.

Based on my own experiences and observations, I strongly agree with the sentiment expressed by the speaker. Violence may seem bold or fearless to some, but it is actually a sign of weakness and lack of emotional intelligence. True bravery lies in acts of forgiveness, compassion, and letting go of grudges. It takes great strength to show mercy, especially when one has been wronged deeply. This perspective comes from my own struggles with anger and resentment, and the relief I have felt when I have chosen to forgive and move on. It’s not an easy path, but it is a brave one.

The things he said struck a chord with Kimiko, making her believe that both she and Frenchie needed to work on forgiving ourselves little by little each day.

In this tender instant, she taught and guided Frenchie on the importance of forgiveness for both of them to love themselves anew. This discovery seemed essential for her as well, in order to rediscover her own voice. The underlying message suggested this possibility.

Regrettably, the leisurely journey toward self-love and healing was disrupted when we learned that the Boys were being pursued.

The team chose to split up, believing it would increase their chances of escaping Homelander’s approaching anger, but they were soon apprehended.

I was unexpectedly grabbed by unidentified individuals, but Annie, played by Erin Moriarty, managed to escape using her newly regained abilities. MM, portrayed by Laz Alonso, was shocked when Love Sausage, or Derek Johns, slapped him and dragged him off in the men’s restroom. Meanwhile, Kimiko and Frenchie were confronted by Kate and Sam from Gen V.

Kate subtly influenced Frenchie with a rumor she had heard, leading him to leave with her using just a gentle touch. On the other hand, Sam took hold of Kimiko forcefully.

Observing Frenchie stroll towards peril without hesitation left Kimiko feeling alarmed, and for the first instance in a while, she employed her vocal cords to warn him. With growing intensity, she shouted “No!” as he continued to advance towards the open doors of the van.

That instant was deeply moving and strengthened her connection with Frenchie, yet we can’t help but sense that she was denied something valuable once more.

In a situation beyond her control, her voice was silenced from her. A moment of healing would have made her regaining it more impactful. Instead of another painful experience adding to her past traumas, she could have triumphantly overcome them, as “The Boys” seemed to be leading up to that point.

The show forgoes developing the more complex and captivating narrative thread in favor of a swift, emotionally charged scene, aiming to create suspense for the conclusion by sidelining Kimiko’s story.

The Boys season 4 finale post credit scene explained

If you hadn’t stayed until the final moments, you would have missed Homelander seeing his father, Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), for the first time since the night they joined forces with Butcher to destroy him.

In the faulty confrontation, Soldier Boy amplified his powers to their peak intensity to eliminate Homelander, an act that would have been lethal for those nearby.

Queen Maeve (portrayed by Dominique McElligott) gave up her powers to save him, enabling his safe escape from the building through flight, which subsequently exploded harmlessly in the distance.

Grace took care that Soldier Boy was safely stored in deep stasis, keeping him unaware and secured for an extended period.

Now Homelander has discovered where they’ve been hiding him.

“You gotta be f**king kidding me,” he said. “This whole time?”

Homelander appeared displeased as he set eyes on his father, yet there was a chance he might try to bring Soldier Boy into his newly formed superhero squad.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but speculate that if Soldier Boy turns down his proposal, I’d be fully convinced that he finds it unappealing at the very least, in the beginning. However, Homelander’s deep-rooted craving for approval could lead him to take drastic measures to demonstrate his value.

If they agree on this matter, the consequences could be catastrophic for both of them, even if only temporary. However, we shudder at the thought of Homelander’s reaction if Soldier Boy were to defy him. The potential backlash could lead to chaos and turmoil, making for a destructive ending to the series.

All season of The Boys are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video now.
