Zcash Activates Ironwood NU6.3 to Boost Shielded Security, ZEC Slides

Key Highlights

 • Zcash activated Ironwood NU6.3, introducing a new shielded pool to address the Orchard soundness vulnerability.
 • Orchard funds must now migrate through a protocol-level turnstile before entering the new Ironwood pool.
 • The upgrade includes formal verification and security audits, though the ZEC price fell over 5% in the past 24 hours despite the technical changes.

Zcash, a digital currency focused on privacy, completed a major network update called Ironwood NU6.3 on Tuesday. This upgrade fixed a security flaw found in its Orchard feature and makes it easier to confirm the total amount of Zcash in circulation.

Zcash Open Development Lab announced on X (formerly Twitter) Tuesday that the original Orchard pool is now limited following its activation. Any funds moving from Orchard to the new Ironwood shielded pool must now go through a built-in security check.

What the upgrade means for users

The Ironwood upgrade was created to fix a security flaw found in May 2026 by Taylor Hornby at Shielded Labs. The issue was reported responsibly and quickly fixed, and there’s no indication anyone took advantage of it or that any ZEC funds were at risk.

Ironwood enhances the security of its private transaction pool by using rigorous verification methods and having external experts review its cryptography. This improvement was a collaborative effort involving several groups within the Zcash community – Shielded Labs, Project Tachyon, Valar Group, the Zcash Foundation, and wallet developer Zodl.

If you currently have funds in Orchard, you’ll need to move them to the new Ironwood pool. The latest version of the Zodl wallet (3.8.0) lets you do this easily, without creating a new wallet or address. We’re also working on a feature that will automate this process soon.

Network upgrade fails to lift ZEC price

On July 28, 2026, at 8:17 AM Indian Standard Time, Zcash (ZEC) was priced at $462.93. Over the last 24 hours, its value decreased by 5.33%, and it dropped 14.88% over the past week. Throughout the previous day, the price of ZEC fluctuated between $459.39 and $490.96, reflecting general trends in the cryptocurrency market.

Although the recent Ironwood upgrade is a positive development from a technical standpoint, it hasn’t yet led to an increase in Zcash’s price. Currently, ZEC is trading far below its peak value of $5,941.80, which it reached in 2016.

Zcash is currently valued at $7.78 billion and continues to see high levels of trading. Its price in the short term will likely be influenced by overall market trends and how quickly users switch over to the updated privacy features.

Adoption challenges remain

Even with the recent technical improvements from Ironwood, Zcash is still having trouble becoming widely used and performing well in the market. Privacy coins in general are facing difficulties gaining popularity, especially as governments increase scrutiny on transactions that hide identities. The fact that Zcash frequently needs quick updates to fix security flaws raises concerns about the safety of its complex privacy features and could make users lose trust over time.

Although the switch to the new system is meant to be easy, it could create some obstacles and slow things down. Because this project focuses on financial privacy, concerns about its practical use and competition from newer, similar options might restrict how much it can grow.
