Vince Staples Returns, Reveals New Album Release Date

Hip-hop fans have a lot to look forward to this summer. Following new music from artists like Earl Sweatshirt, MIKE, SURF GANG, and Yeat, we can now anticipate releases from Isaiah Rashad, Drake, and Vince Staples. Staples recently announced his return with his first song in nearly two years, “Blackberry Marmalade.”

Around two weeks ago, the rapper emailed his fans to announce a new, private Discord server. He created the server to give fans a better and more direct experience.

He didn’t say much else in his first message, only hinting at some playful trouble with: “Stay tuned, because there will be both hijinks and shenanigans… I’ll be back before you know it.”

So, I was super hyped to see that Staples dropped a new single on Instagram this Saturday! It’s his first studio track since Dark Times came out back in May. It’s called “Blackberry Marmalade” and it’s not on Spotify or anything yet, but it’s awesome – definitely reminds me of his older stuff with a really strong guitar beat. They even dropped a cool music video for it, directed by Bradley J. Calder, which is a nice touch.

The music video for Staples’ song uses a first-person perspective, putting viewers in the position of a shooter trying to flee after a mass shooting. The shooting takes place at Frank’s Coffee Shop and Restaurant in Burbank, a popular location for movies and TV shows. After the shooter dies by suicide, a quote from Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” appears on screen, asking, “So the question is not whether we will be extremists, but what kind of extremists we will be.”

Viewers quickly noticed a red cap on the dashboard of Staples’ car in the first thirty seconds of the video. The cap has the word “CRYBABY” printed on it, along with the date “June 5th” on the side.

The new album, “Blackberry Marmalade,” will be available on all streaming platforms next week. Keep an eye out for more news about the upcoming release of CRYBABY.
