With the trial of the only suspect charged in Tupac Shakur’s murder about to begin, the rapper’s stepbrother has filed a lawsuit claiming investigators are finally making progress – after almost 30 years – in uncovering who was involved in the shooting.
Mopreme, whose real name is Maurice Shakur, has sued Duane “Keffe D” Davis and others in Los Angeles court, seeking financial compensation for his alleged involvement in the death of the famous rapper. The lawsuit was filed on Tuesday.
On September 7, 1996, Tupac Shakur was shot in Las Vegas while riding in a BMW near the MGM Grand Hotel and Caesars Palace. A white Cadillac drove up beside his car, and someone inside fired shots, hitting the rapper four times.
For thirty years, police investigated this case, but couldn’t solve it. During that time, many theories emerged about rivalries between gangs and people in the music industry.
According to the legal complaint, Maurice Shakur says that many people connected to the case are now deceased or difficult to find. However, he insists that there are still people responsible for Tupac’s murder who haven’t faced justice after 30 years.
“This action seeks to change that,” the complaint continues.
In 2023, Las Vegas police made a significant move by charging Davis with first-degree murder. Davis has previously admitted he was in the white Cadillac at the time of the incident.
As a huge movie and music fan, I’ve been following this case closely. Apparently, the authorities are using things the suspect himself wrote in his 2019 book, ‘Compton Street Legend,’ to build their case against him. They claim he actually planned to get revenge on Tupac after a run-in with his crew. They’re saying he got a .40-caliber Glock and then ordered the shooting. It’s pretty shocking stuff.
Davis has pleaded not guilty and is currently scheduled to stand trial in August.
Maurice Shakur has filed a lawsuit against Davis and up to 100 unidentified people he believes were involved in planning or carrying out the plot to kill Tupac.
In 1997, Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur, sued Orlando Anderson, believing he shot Tupac in retaliation for a beating Tupac and others connected to the Bloods gang gave him earlier that day at the MGM Grand. Anderson died in a gang-related shooting in 1998, and Afeni Shakur’s lawsuit was ultimately dropped in 1999.
According to the lawsuit, recent findings suggest a much larger and more intricate plot to kill Tupac than previously thought – it wasn’t just about getting back at someone for a past fight. The family hopes new evidence will help them uncover the identities of those responsible, currently listed as anonymous defendants in the case.
The lawsuit cites newly obtained evidence, including transcripts from the grand jury investigation into the criminal case and interviews featured in the Netflix documentary “Sean Combs: The Reckoning.” Representatives for Davis and Combs haven’t yet commented on the matter. Combs has consistently denied any role in the shooting.
According to the legal complaint, court records show the people connected to the incident went beyond those in the white Cadillac. The documentary also features claims from top executives at Combs’ record label, alleging his involvement in the killing.
Maurice Shakur argues that recent events significantly change the nature of his wrongful death case compared to the one filed in 1997.
In the 1990s, he performed with Tupac Shakur in the hip-hop groups Outlawz and Thug Life, and he continued making music after Tupac’s death. Now, he’s filing a lawsuit as the person managing the estate of Mutulu Shakur, Tupac’s stepfather, who passed away from cancer in 2023.
