The Testaments star responds to “genuinely scary” Aunt Lydia scene that answered big question

The sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, called The Testaments, recently revealed a major secret while showing a chilling glimpse into the origins of Gilead. The episode featured Aunt Lydia, played by Ann Dowd, facing a difficult choice.

This Hulu series, inspired by Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel, takes place four years after the story of The Handmaid’s Tale. It centers on the teenage daughters of the powerful Commanders in Gilead as they navigate growing up in a strict and controlling society.

Lydia currently leads a school that prepares young women for marriage, and she receives support from a team of helpers. However, her strict aunt, Vidala (played by Mabel Li), seems to resent her leadership.

The recent episode, ‘Stadium,’ showed that Lydia and Vidala—then called Vivian—have a shared history dating back to when Gilead seized control of Boston. They both worked as teachers at the same elementary school and were captured by the Sons of Jacob.

Lydia was determined to survive, which led her to create the Aunts program. As a test of her dedication to Gilead, she was ordered to execute Vivian, but discovered the gun wasn’t loaded when she pulled the trigger.

A quick decision dramatically alters Lydia’s life, according to Dowd in an interview with Variety. Meanwhile, Vivian has realized Lydia would have killed her to protect herself, and that past bitterness is now affecting their present-day connection.

Dowd described a shocking moment where Vidala’s disguise was removed, revealing his colleague. He stated he was then going to shoot her, and that this event triggered a profound and significant transformation in Lydia.

Li described the experience as frightening, explaining that having a blindfold removed to reveal even a prop gun pointed at them was genuinely scary.

Lydia is driven by a natural instinct to survive, but she also actively tries to recruit more women into the Aunts program. This ambition may be the reason Vivian ultimately became Vidala.

Currently, Lydia has to be careful because Vidala has noticed her boss is vulnerable and might try to take her place. Li also hinted that Lydia’s history could influence her future actions.

Li believes Vidala feels Lydia has become weak, and there’s a reason for this. It seems Vidala’s criticism stems from lingering bitterness over something that happened between them in the past.
