Dr. Caroline Muirhead thought she’d met her soulmate when she matched with Alexander “Sandy” McKellar online. Now, she’s the focus of Netflix’s new true crime documentary, Should I Marry a Murderer?, which explores how their relationship led to a dangerous web of secrets and trouble.
The series tells the story of Caroline and how a promising relationship with a Highland gamekeeper took a dark turn. They connected instantly on a dating app and quickly became engaged, which surprised Caroline’s friends. She initially felt certain she’d found the one, but that feeling didn’t last.
Just weeks after proposing, Sandy confessed a shocking secret that changed everything: he’d been involved in concealing a deadly hit-and-run accident from 2017.

Tony Parsons, a husband and father who had beaten cancer, was the man Caroline discovered had been killed while riding home from a charity bike ride. This news put Caroline in a terrible position: she had to choose between protecting the man she loved and revealing the truth, even if it meant losing everything.
The series in three parts shows the difficult emotional and mental impact of Caroline’s choice. Ultimately, she decided to help the police, and the information she gave led to the arrest and conviction of Sandy and his brother, Robert.
Sandy was found guilty of manslaughter and trying to obstruct justice, resulting in a 12-year prison sentence. However, the events that followed, as shown in the documentary series, were complicated and far from simple.

Caroline observed that the case had a lasting and profoundly disruptive effect. Although she contributed to a successful conviction, the experience personally affected her in ways that went far beyond the trial itself.

Caroline’s job as a forensic pathologist became complicated when Tony’s body was taken to the mortuary where she worked. This led to her taking a leave of absence because of a possible conflict of interest.
I was really struck by how open she was about her mental health during everything. It was tough to watch her admit she’d turned to substances to cope with the stress. The documentary really showed how the weight of the case started to break her down, and she became more and more alone as it all went on. It was heartbreaking to see.
Things became more difficult for her when Sandy’s trial began in July 2023. Caroline tried to avoid testifying by searching for Tony’s bike, but this led to her arrest for disrespecting the court. She has since described feeling pressured by the Scottish police to work with them.
Right from the start, the police warned me that I could face legal issues if I didn’t help them with their investigation, as I told The Daily Record. I trusted them completely – they assured me my identity would be protected and that I’d receive their support.
But as soon as I did what they asked, I was left to face the consequences. From the beginning, they warned me I could get into trouble for helping someone commit a crime, like wasting the police’s time or even being an accomplice.
Caroline was deeply afraid for her safety and worried that Sandy might seek revenge after getting out of prison. After everything that happened, she moved to the Scottish coast to try and start over.
She’s been prioritizing her well-being, focusing on staying sober and attending therapy. She’s also been working to mend things with her family. Recently, she shared with The Irish Daily Mail that she’s found love again with someone new.
Caroline describes telling her story as a deeply healing process. She explained that creating the documentary with Netflix involved revisiting very difficult moments, which wasn’t easy, but ultimately worthwhile.
It’s been a truly healing process. After several difficult years, I’m feeling hopeful about the future and excited to start a new phase of my life.
Should I Marry a Murderer? is available to stream on Netflix.
