Jack Quaid, known for his role as Hughie in The Boys, is now voicing Superman in the new animated series, My Adventures with Superman. This is a big change for the actor, who plays a character that hunts superheroes in The Boys, but now gets to be one of the most famous superheroes of all time. He’s been voicing Superman since 2023.
Josh Quaid is receiving a lot of praise for his work on My Adventures with Superman. The show is consistently considered one of the best Superman series ever made, thanks to its faithfulness to the comics and high quality. Many viewers feel Quaid’s voice perfectly complements the show’s animation and overall feel. The series is also doing well commercially, with a third season already being made and a spin-off, My Adventures with Green Lantern, planned.
The animated series My Adventures with Superman is planning to adapt a well-known Superman comic book storyline. While the show has drawn inspiration from various Superman comics in the past, it hasn’t directly retold a specific story until now. The creators have announced that season 3 will be based on a particularly famous comic book arc.
My Adventures With Superman Is Adapting Reign Of The Supermen
According to Jake Wyatt, the creator of My Adventures with Superman, the show’s third season will be based on the “Reign of the Supermen” comic book storyline. This story immediately follows the famous “Death of Superman” from 1993, where, after Superman’s apparent death in a fight with Doomsday, four different individuals appear in Metropolis claiming to be the new Superman, each competing for control.
Following Superman’s apparent death, several characters emerged claiming to be his successor, including Cyborg Superman (Hank Henshaw), Superboy (Conner Kent), the Eradicator, and Steel. As the story unfolded, it became clear that Cyborg Superman was trying to dismantle Superman’s reputation, while the original Superman was actually alive, though weakened, within the Fortress of Solitude. Ultimately, Superman recovered his powers and resolved the conflict, proving who the true Superman was.
“Reign of the Supermen” is now considered a highly impactful Superman story from the past few decades. It was adapted into a direct-to-DVD animated movie of the same name in 2019. Additionally, elements from the story were used in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, specifically Superman’s return after his battle with Doomsday in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and his iconic black suit.
My Adventures With Superman Is Making A Few Changes To Reign Of The Supermen
Similar to his previous comic book series, The Boys, Jack Quaid’s My Adventures with Superman won’t stick strictly to the source material when adapting the “Reign of the Supermen” storyline. The biggest difference is the setup: In the original comics, “Reign of the Supermen” begins right after Superman seemingly dies fighting Doomsday. However, Superman will still be alive in the third season of My Adventures with Superman.
The second season of My Adventures with Superman concluded with Superman’s victory over Brainiac, a different outcome than the classic comic storyline where he battled Doomsday and seemingly died. Since the “Reign of the Supermen” story usually follows directly after Superman’s death in the comics, the show is clearly putting its own twist on things. This isn’t surprising, though. The 2019 Reign of the Supermen movie also deviated from the source material, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League only drew limited inspiration from the comics rather than being a straight adaptation.
According to Wyatt, the third season of My Adventures with Superman isn’t focusing on the traditional ‘Death of Superman’ storyline. Instead, it’s asking bigger questions about what it truly means to be Superman. The show seems to be moving away from the mystery of who the Supermen are – since that story is already well-known – and will instead explore how Superman deals with others who have his powers, including the arrival of Superboy.
Considering how well My Adventures with Superman has done so far, it’s likely the series will do a great job adapting the classic “Reign of the Supermen” storyline. Good adaptations always add their own unique spin, and this show appears ready to do just that. Hopefully, season 3 of My Adventures with Superman will even improve upon one of the most famous Superman stories of the last 50 years.
