Almost fifty years after it last aired, the superhero show The Bionic Woman is unexpectedly becoming popular again, climbing the charts on streaming services and capturing the attention of a new generation.
The classic show The Bionic Woman is proving popular on Apple TV. As of May 12th, it’s currently the 11th most-downloaded series in the U.S., according to FlixPatrol. Since becoming available to rent or buy earlier this month, it’s even climbed as high as No. 7, showing a surprising boost in viewers for the show after all these years.
The Bionic Woman Expanded the Universe of The Six Million Dollar Man
The recent popularity of The Bionic Woman on streaming platforms mirrors the success of its sister show, currently ranked as the third most popular series on the Apple TV Store. Both series are part of the same franchise and played a key role in shaping today’s superhero TV shows.
The Bionic Woman tells the story of Jamie Sommers (Lindsay Wagner), a skydiver seriously injured in an accident. A secretive government agency offers to rebuild her with advanced cybernetic implants, and she accepts, becoming a secret agent. As the “Bionic Woman,” Jamie undertakes dangerous missions, using her incredible new abilities.
Originally starting in 1976 as a continuation of The Six Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman didn’t achieve the same level of popularity and ended after three seasons. Despite this, it’s gained a dedicated fanbase over time, and continues to be enjoyed by viewers on streaming services almost fifty years later. It remains a fondly remembered show.
Could The Bionic Woman Ever Return?
Like its main character, The Bionic Woman has enjoyed a surprisingly long run. Even after the original series ended in 1978, Jamie Sommers continued her adventures in several TV movies alongside Lee Majors’ character, Steve Austin from The Six Million Dollar Man. More recently, NBC tried to bring the show back in 2006 with a new series starring Michelle Ryan, but it was short-lived, lasting only one season of eight episodes.
Since the 2006 revival didn’t succeed, there haven’t been any official announcements about bringing back The Bionic Woman. However, Warner Bros. has tried several times to find someone to star in a new version. Despite years of being stuck in development, this project could potentially lead to a full-fledged return for the Bionic Woman if it’s ever completed.
The Bionic Woman is available to buy or rent on the Apple TV Store.
