In late April, Prime Video launched a beautiful new take on a classic supernatural drama that many felt needed a fresh start. Based on a famous novel by Chilean-American author Isabel Allende, this limited series has received high praise for staying true to and lovingly adapting a literary masterpiece.
Francisca Alegria’s adaptation of Isabel Allende’s The House of the Spirits, now on Prime Video, feels true to the author’s vision. Unlike the 1993 film, this version features a cast of native Spanish speakers and beautifully captures the magical atmosphere central to the story.
This TV reboot is a rare success, surpassing the original adaptation. While appealing to fans of Latin American history and magical realism, The House of the Spirits is beautifully made, visually stunning, and expertly told, making it one of Prime Video’s strongest series for any viewer.
The House Of The Spirits Is A Near-Perfect Supernatural Drama
Isabel Allende’s The House of the Spirits is considered her masterpiece and a globally celebrated novel, firmly rooted in the magical realism tradition made famous by authors like Jorge Luis Borges and Gabriel García Márquez. However, its complex, sprawling story, which spans multiple generations, has proven very challenging to adapt into a film.
Isabel Allende’s novel follows one family through four important eras in Chilean history, weaving their personal story with the country’s biggest moments. It’s a sweeping family saga that’s as compelling as any great historical drama you’ll find on streaming services.
This is a great example of how to bring history to life for people all over the world. By focusing on the compelling story of Clara Trueba and her family, and using rich details about the time period, it makes the events affecting Chileans truly resonate with viewers.
Clara’s abilities to see the future and move objects with her mind are fantastical elements that make her family’s time-traveling story unique and meaningful. The Prime Video series, The House of the Spirits, skillfully weaves these elements into the show’s overall style and structure.
Prime Video’s Reboot Is One Of Streaming’s Best
This miniseries is a standout reboot, easily one of the best ever made for streaming. The House of Spirits has rightfully earned its popularity with both audiences and critics – it’s a consistently excellent and captivating show.
Many streaming reboots don’t live up to the originals – think of shows like Heroes Reborn and the new Gossip Girl. But Prime Video’s historical series is a welcome exception. It offers a much deeper understanding of the culture and more emotional impact than the movie it’s based on, which was often lacking in those areas.
The House Of The Spirits Was Previously An Underwhelming Meryl Streep Movie
I always felt like Prime Video’s adaptation of The House of the Spirits really had an uphill battle. The 1993 film, with stars like Meryl Streep, Jeremy Irons, and Winona Ryder, just didn’t do Isabel Allende’s incredible story justice, in my opinion. It completely missed the mark and never really captured the heart of the book.
Bille August’s film adaptation of Allende’s family saga focuses too much on style over substance, making each time period feel rushed and incomplete. It’s probably a good thing this movie is now available only on Prime Video, where it’s likely to be forgotten.
As a critic, I have a strong feeling that this new take on The House of the Spirits isn’t just the best screen adaptation we’ve seen – it has the potential to be a truly standout drama in the world of Latin American television. Coupled with Netflix’s One Hundred Years of Solitude, it feels like we’re on the cusp of a real renaissance for magical realism on the small screen – a golden age for the genre, if you will.
