Paul McCartney continues to create wonderful music, even after all these years. Most artists his age would have retired, but he’s still going strong – and thankfully so! He consistently delights audiences, as he did once again on Saturday Night Live.
This performer is a seasoned veteran of Saturday Night Live, having appeared nine times. Yet, he consistently manages to surprise audiences with his performances, including a three-song set during the May 16th episode hosted by Will Ferrell. And was it a good episode? Absolutely.
Paul McCartney, with a new album coming out on May 29th, played with the energy of someone still eager to win over an audience. It’s something all artists should strive for – not to demand adoration, but to push themselves creatively and deliver fresh, exciting music. McCartney truly embodies this spirit.
Paul McCartney performs three songs on Saturday Night Live
“Days We Left Behind”
The song, released on Paul McCartney’s new album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, was already familiar to those who heard the single beforehand, and they knew it had a gentle, slightly sad feel. It’s a solid track – not quite his all-time best work, but still better than most artists could achieve.
Paul McCartney’s voice isn’t quite as powerful live as it used to be, which is understandable. However, that slight vulnerability actually enhances the song, particularly its theme of looking back on his childhood in Liverpool, adding an emotional depth it wouldn’t have had otherwise.
Honestly, it’s amazing that someone who’s almost 84 can still blow so many of us away – it really shows how incredible he is. Listening to this song just makes me hope he keeps creating music for another 60 years, at least!
“Band on the Run”
This wasn’t a new song, but it had a lot more punch than McCartney’s last performance. The question was whether he could bring the energy the song deserved – and the answer was a definite yes.
Paul McCartney’s vocals are powerful in this track, and his often-overlooked bass skills are fantastic, as usual. The band supporting him is top-notch – anyone working with Sir Paul has to be highly skilled. Notably, Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers joined them on Saturday Night Live. While a faster tempo might have been nice, it’s still an enjoyable song.
“Coming Up”
The show ended with an unexpected performance that many fans felt was Paul McCartney’s strongest yet. It was a loud, high-energy, and all-around fantastic moment – exactly what everyone wanted.
