Patrick Muldoon, ‘Days of Our Lives’ and ‘Melrose Place’ actor, dies at 57

Patrick Muldoon, an actor who appeared in shows like “Days of Our Lives” and “Melrose Place,” as well as the film “Starship Troopers,” has passed away at the age of 57.

Actor and producer David Muldoon passed away Sunday, his manager told Variety. Deadline reports that his death was sudden, following a heart attack. Representatives for Muldoon have been contacted for confirmation.

As a soap opera fan, I remember when Patrick Muldoon first joined “Days of Our Lives”! He played Austin Reed, Billie Reed’s brother, and was originally written as an up-and-coming boxer. I first saw him in the role back in ’92 and he was a regular until ’95. Then, surprisingly, he came back for another stint from 2011 to 2012, but this time Austin was a forensic accountant – quite the career change! It was fun to see him revisit the character, even with the new profession.

I was really saddened to hear about the passing of John Nolan. He was a fantastic British actor, known for his work on stage and in films. What a lot of people might not know is that he was actually Christopher and Jonathan Nolan’s uncle! He was 87 years old. It’s a loss for the acting world, and I’m thinking of his family right now.

You know, when I read an old interview with Richard Hatch from 1995, he really opened up about leaving ‘Battlestar Galactica.’ He said playing Apollo was a fantastic gig, and he didn’t rush into anything. He described it as a really tough call – one of the biggest decisions of his career, and he took his time seriously considering it.

Muldoon explained his departure by saying it was for the same reasons actors leave soap operas – to explore other opportunities in areas like late-night television and film. He felt ready to try something new and didn’t want to look back with regrets, so he decided to pursue those opportunities now.

From 1995 to 1998, Jack Muldoon played the recurring character Richard Hart on the TV show “Melrose Place.” He also appeared in the 1997 film “Starship Troopers” as Zander Barcalow, a pilot who was a rival to the character played by Casper Van Dien.

Born on September 27, 1968, in San Pedro, Muldoon developed a love for football at a young age. He began playing when he was six years old and continued throughout high school at Loyola and later at the University of Southern California (USC).

In a 2012 interview with The Times, Muldoon reflected that he had a successful college football career despite his size as a tight end. He also shared that being repeatedly run over during practice by his USC teammate, the legendary linebacker Junior Seau, influenced his decision to pursue acting. Muldoon started acting during the football offseason and landed early roles on popular shows like “Who’s the Boss?” and “Saved by the Bell.”

Besides being an actor, Muldoon also worked as a producer on films including “Riff Raff” (2024), “Marlowe” (2022), “The Card Counter” (2021), and “The Comeback Trail” (2020). He recently announced on Instagram that he’s an executive producer for the new film “Kockroach.”
