It’s surprising, but Netflix’s new show, Scooby-Doo: Origins, will be the first live-action TV series in the 57-year history of the Scooby-Doo franchise. The last TV appearance of Scooby-Doo wasn’t well-received; HBO Max’s adult-oriented reboot, Velma, was widely considered a failure and disliked by both longtime fans and new viewers.
The Scooby-Doo franchise is getting a fresh start with a new Netflix series called Scooby-Doo: Origins. This show is a prequel that reveals how the original Mystery Inc. team first came together. While the gang’s beginnings have been explored before – in the 2020 movie Scoob! and the critically praised 2010 series Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated – this new series offers another take on their origin story. Mystery Incorporated was particularly noted for blending the show’s classic comedy with elements of spooky, atmospheric horror and intriguing mysteries.
Despite the long history of Scooby-Doo, the new show isn’t just a repeat of old ideas. Scooby-Doo: Origins is a first for the franchise: after nearly 60 years, it’s the very first live-action Scooby-Doo series. While there have been live-action and animated movies and over a dozen cartoon series, this Netflix reboot feels fresh because it’s presented in a live-action format for the first time.
Why A Live-Action Scooby-Doo Series Is Only Happening Now
Josh Applebaum and Scott Rosenberg, the team behind Scooby-Doo: Origins, are also known for the popular Netflix series Everything Sucks and the horror show From on MGM+. If this new Scooby-Doo series could capture what made those shows successful, it would likely outperform many previous reboots. It’s surprising it took so long to create a live-action version, but it’s probably because streaming services now allow for shorter seasons and provide the necessary budget to realistically bring Scooby to life.
It’s difficult to picture a long-running, live-action Scooby-Doo TV series from the 1990s or 2000s succeeding. Even popular, big-budget shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The X-Files wouldn’t have had enough money to realistically bring Scooby to life. The early 2000s Scooby-Doo movies invested heavily in making the character look good, and a TV show with that level of spending – especially one with just eight episodes – would have been unheard of back then.
Netflix’s Scooby-Doo: Origins Can Redefine The Franchise
TV production costs have changed a lot recently, and many popular Netflix shows now cost even more to make than big-budget movies – but they still make the streaming service money. Shows like Wednesday and Stranger Things, both teen-focused mystery series that tap into nostalgia, are two of Netflix’s most successful franchises. Now that a Stranger Things spin-off shows the series is becoming more family-friendly and expanding its genre, Scooby-Doo: Origins is well-positioned to take its place as a major hit.
| Live-Action Scooby-Doo Movie | Release Year | |
|---|---|---|
| Scooby-Doo | 2002 | Theatrical Release |
| Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed | 2004 | Theatrical Release |
| Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins | 2009 | TV Movie |
| Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster | 2010 | TV Movie |
| Velma & Daphne | 2018 | Straight-To-Video |
Honestly, the title Scooby-Doo: Origins immediately struck me as a sign this won’t be your typical, brightly-colored Scooby-Doo adventure. It feels much more serious and mature than the films we got in the 2000s. From the marketing, it’s clear they’re leaning into the supernatural mystery aspect, rather than pure comedy, which is fantastic. As a long-time fan, I’m really hoping this show delivers something genuinely new and exciting for the franchise when it hits the streaming service.
