2028 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for movies based on video games, following a recent change to the release schedule. Hollywood is making more and more of these films, and franchises like Mario, Sonic, Five Nights at Freddy’s, and Minecraft have shown they can be big hits with audiences. Currently, The Super Mario Bros. Movie from 2023 is the most successful video game movie, earning about $1.4 billion globally, followed by the 2025 film A Minecraft Movie with around $960.4 million in worldwide earnings.
2026 is shaping up to be a great year for video game adaptations! The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has been a huge success, already earning over $834 million worldwide and heading towards the $1 billion mark. Iron Lung, directed by Markiplier, also performed well, bringing in over $51 million on a small $3 million budget. Several more video game movies are planned for release later in the year, including Mortal Kombat II, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, and The Angry Birds Movie 3.
Video game adaptations will continue to be popular on the big screen in 2027, with several promising movies already scheduled for release. These include the fourth installment in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, a film based on The Legend of Zelda, a follow-up to the Minecraft movie, and an adaptation of Helldivers. Given their roots in established and beloved franchises or popular games, all of these films have the potential to be successful.
2028 is shaping up to be a huge year for video game adaptations, with movies based on popular titles like Elden Ring, Call of Duty, and a new Sonic the Hedgehog film already planned. Recently, Universal added another Nintendo movie to the schedule, making 2028 an even more exciting year for fans of video game movies.
Universal Has Reportedly Added A Nintendo Movie To Its 2028 Release Calendar
Following the hit movie The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Universal Pictures is planning another animated film based on a Nintendo property. IGN reports that the studio has added a currently unnamed animated event film to its release schedule, set to come out on April 12, 2028. While Universal hasn’t revealed what the film will be about, several Nintendo franchises could be potential candidates.
Rumors suggest Nintendo is considering a Donkey Kong movie, possibly featuring Seth Rogen reprising his role from The Super Mario Bros. Movie. A Star Fox film starring Glen Powell, who appeared in The Super Mario Bros. Galaxy Movie, is another possibility, and the ending of that film hinted at future adventures for his character. While a Super Mario 3 adaptation seems likely eventually, it probably won’t be the next project, given the three-year gap between Galaxy and the first Mario movie.
2028 Is Lining Up To Be A Great Year For Video Game Movies
Illumination, the studio behind popular animated films, is adding another Nintendo property to its growing list of video game adaptations, joining projects based on Elden Ring, Call of Duty, and a new Sonic the Hedgehog movie. The Elden Ring film, based on the award-winning 2022 fantasy role-playing game from FromSoftware, will premiere on March 3, 2028. Alex Garland is directing for A24, and the cast includes Cailee Spaeny, Nick Offerman, Emma Laird, and Peter Serafinowicz.
A new Call of Duty movie is coming out on June 30, 2028, bringing the popular video game franchise to the big screen. The series has been creating games since 2003, including the battle royale hit, Call of Duty: Warzone. Peter Berg is directing the film. Also scheduled for release in 2028, on December 22nd, is a new Sonic movie. Details about the plot are currently unknown, but it might explore a different story or focus on a character like Shadow.
As a movie lover, I think every film has potential, but some have a bigger advantage going in. Take Elden Ring – it’s a critically adored game, and Call of Duty is a huge name in gaming. The upcoming Sonic movie is already benefiting from being part of a winning series, with the third film raking in nearly $500 million globally. And the next animated film from Nintendo and Illumination? That’s almost guaranteed to be a success too. It might not be another Mario movie, but Nintendo has so many other fantastic games that would translate really well to the big screen. I’m excited to see what they do with another of their franchises!
