Netflix’s New 8-Part Sci-Fi Conspiracy Series Revealed In First Trailer For The Boroughs

The Boroughs is out of this world.

The creators of the hit show Stranger Things, known as The Duffer Brothers, are producing a new supernatural series for Netflix. Their production company, Upside Down Pictures, will release the show on May 21st. It features a well-known cast and tells the story of a seemingly idyllic town terrorized by frightening supernatural creatures.

I’m so excited to hear the creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, are back with a new show on Netflix! It’s another sci-fi story, but this time it centers around a mysterious community and the secrets hidden within – it seems there are some non-human residents! The cast is incredible – you’ve got Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, and so many other talented actors like Bill Pullman and Jena Malone. It’s called The Boroughs, and the first season has eight episodes. Fingers crossed that Netflix renews it for a second season because I’m already hooked!

The Boroughs, a beautiful retirement community in the New Mexico desert, promises its residents a wonderful life. However, for Sam Cooper (Alfred Molina), a newcomer, it quickly feels restrictive. A frightening experience one night reveals that a terrifying creature is lurking within the community’s seemingly perfect streets.

I’ve always felt sorry for Sam – everyone just saw him as a rambling old man and dismissed his concerns. But I admire how he found friends in the most unexpected places! A really clever ex-reporter, someone searching for meaning, a music manager who’s seen it all, and a brilliant doctor desperate to help – they all believed in him when no one else did. It’s amazing to watch them, this group of underdogs, come together to uncover the secrets of The Boroughs, especially knowing they’re racing against the clock. They’ve been overlooked for too long, and I’m rooting for them to expose the truth.

I recently saw this film about Sam, a retired engineer played by Moline, who’s grappling with the loss of his wife and trying to find a new purpose. He ends up in this place called The Boroughs, and things get really weird, really fast! He basically gets pulled into helping a group of quirky characters save a community he initially had no interest in joining. It’s a surprisingly heartwarming story about finding connection when you least expect it.

Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of the show, discussed the new series and shared why it was a great fit for their production company, Upside Down Pictures.

We were big fans of Will and Jeff’s show, Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, and really wanted to work with them. We met, and it was an instant connection. We didn’t discuss any specific projects at first, just let them know we were interested in collaborating. A week later, they shared a basic idea for what would eventually become The Boroughs, and we immediately knew we wanted to bring it to life.

I remember when the initial idea for our first project came to us – it was just a couple of sentences, honestly! It involved a group of seniors in a retirement home… and monsters. We immediately loved it. Jeff, Will, and I are all huge fans of Cocoon, and we’d always wondered why nobody had really explored that blend of heartwarming characters and fantastical elements before. It just felt like the perfect fit, and it ended up being the first thing Upside Down Pictures actually got made!

Will Matthews and Jeffrey Addis, the team behind Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, created The Boroughs. Like their hit show Stranger Things – where a seemingly normal Indiana town is invaded by monsters – The Boroughs features a town facing extraordinary threats. Matt Duffer explained the similarities, saying the two shows both center on “a band of unlikely heroes and unlikely friends battling something bigger than themselves, battling something extraordinary and supernatural.”

The Boroughs will be arriving on May 21.
