Summary
- Museo Jumex in Mexico City is currently staging Football & Art: A Shared Emotion through July 26, spotlighting art’s fascination with football across generations and mediums
- Objects of Glory, a sprawling showcase of iconic sports memorabilia opening June 10, spans the game from its origins to today
Okay, so I heard Mexico City’s Jumex Museum is getting into the football spirit with some cool new exhibits! Apparently, contemporary art and design have always been into sports, and they’re showing that off with these new displays. Sounds like a fun way to combine my two interests!
Currently on display until July 26th is Football & Art: A Shared Emotion, one of several exhibits in Mexico City celebrating soccer. As part of the Host City Mexico City Cultural Corridor, the show explores the history and influence of the sport through various art forms – including paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs, and videos – highlighting its cultural significance both in Mexico and internationally.
One highlight is Sofía Echeverri’s new textile artwork, “Dechado de impedimentos (Sampler of obstacles),” which celebrates the Mexican women’s football team that competed in the 1971 World Cup qualifiers, while also acknowledging the difficulties they overcame. Elsewhere, the art collective Tercerunquinto has created a sculpture from seats rescued from the Azteca Stadium – the same stadium where the first match will be played.

Next month, a fascinating exhibit called Objects of Glory will open, showcasing some of football’s most important historical items. Starting June 10th, and created with Qatar Museums and the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, the exhibit explores the history of the sport from the late 1800s to the present day. It will feature iconic items like match balls, boots, trophies, jerseys, and historical documents, illustrating how the game has changed over time.
Highlights include the jersey Diego Maradona wore during the 1986 World Cup quarter-final and the boots Pelé wore in the 1970 World Cup – a pivotal moment that helped popularize soccer worldwide.
According to Abdulla Al Mulla, Director of the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, sports have a special way of uniting people through common feelings and experiences. He explains that the “Objects of Glory” exhibition demonstrates the museum’s dedication to protecting the history of football’s greatest moments, and to fostering connections between people, cultures, and communities through the sport.
Currently showing in Mexico City, you can experience Football & Art: A Shared Emotion until the 26th. Objects of Glory opens June 10th and runs through August 30th. Visit the museum’s website for details on planning your visit.
Museo Jumex is located at Blvd. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra 303, Granada, in the Miguel Hidalgo borough of Mexico City, postal code 11520, Mexico.
