As a huge animation fan, I have to say that Netflix’s Arcane really blew me away, and not just visually. What impressed me most was how brilliantly it built upon the world of League of Legends. Before the show, the characters and their backstories felt a little disconnected, just bits and pieces here and there. Arcane took characters like Vi and Jinx and gave them so much depth, making them feel truly real. And it didn’t just stop at the characters; it made Piltover and Zaun feel like actual, living cities you could get lost in. It was a fantastic expansion of the lore.

Netflix proved its ability to build compelling stories within established worlds with the success of Arcane. This makes their upcoming adaptation of Magic: The Gathering particularly promising, even though it’s based on a very different kind of property. While Arcane came from a popular online game, Magic: The Gathering is the classic trading card game that has been a staple of hobby shops and competitive gaming since 1993.

While League of Legends provided Netflix with a limited opportunity to test the waters, Magic: The Gathering offers a vast and expansive world of possibilities.
