“Devilishly fun” British period thriller with Ruth Wilson gets a must-see first trailer

The new British horror-thriller, Victorian Psycho, starring Ruth Wilson and Maika Monroe, just released its first trailer. The film, described as “devilishly fun,” is set to hit theaters this fall.

The movie is based on Virginia Feito’s 2025 novel and stars Monroe as Winifred Notty, a quirky governess who takes a job at a grand, old estate in the 1850s. Though she seems pleasant, Winifred quickly brings disorder and excitement with her.

The story follows a disturbing series of events as Winifred’s mental state deteriorates, and her violent actions disrupt the peace of her home. The tagline asks: how much further will this dangerous killer go, and who will be left to face her anger?

True Brit Entertainment recently released a fast-paced trailer for their upcoming film, showing Winifred quickly unsettling the residents of Ensor House. Expect lots of rock music, disturbing imagery, and, naturally, some gore.

Feito wrote the film, and Zachary Wigon directed it. The movie features a strong supporting cast with actors like Wilson, Jason Isaacs, Thomasin McKenzie, Jacobi Jupe, Amy De Bhrún, and Evie Templeton.

The new historical horror-thriller premiered today at the Cannes Film Festival and is getting mostly good reactions. Currently, three out of five critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes recommend the film.

According to Next Best Picture, Victorian Psycho is a spooky and entertaining film that explores female anger, boosted by a fantastic performance from Maika Monroe and a clever balance of tones. They described it as “devilishly fun.”

According to TheWrap, Marilyn Monroe’s performance is consistently captivating and energetic, maintaining a thrilling sense of unpredictability even in calmer scenes, making it feel like something explosive could happen at any moment.

The Film Stage agreed, noting that Victorian Psycho is not only a skillfully made thriller but also a surprisingly funny comedy, thanks to the excellent performances of its three lead actors and their perfectly timed, deadpan delivery.

While some critics enjoyed the film, others were less impressed. The Daily Telegraph gave it just one star, calling it terrible and a waste of time. Little White Lies described it as a disappointing turn for the director after their previous films, The Heart Machine and Sanctuary.

Victorian Psycho is expected to be released in cinemas in the autumn.
