Most network TV shows couldn’t feature the intense, disturbing, and often shocking violence seen in Bryan Fuller’s three-season crime thriller on NBC. However, few shows ever present dark and gruesome material as artfully as Hannibal, which stars Mads Mikkelsen as the infamous forensic psychologist.
Despite being a dark and disturbing crime drama set in the twisted world of Hannibal Lecter, the show is surprisingly easy to watch again and again. This likely explains why Hannibal has become a beloved cult classic, consistently finding new fans and experiencing renewed interest over time.
The show has recently become very popular, cracking the top 10 on HBO Max in multiple European countries. It saw a similar jump in popularity on Netflix back in 2020 when it became available in the US, and fans are still actively hoping for a fourth season.
While Hannibal is considered one of the best shows NBC ever produced, it wasn’t designed for a broad audience. It’s quite different from typical network shows like sitcoms or standard crime dramas. However, that’s actually a strength – it’s finding new fans all the time because it doesn’t try to appeal to everyone, and instead embraces a dedicated, specific audience.
NBC’s Hannibal Has Aged Into A Cult Classic
Beyond attracting viewers who enjoy dark and disturbing crime shows, Hannibal is a truly exceptional horror series. It vividly portrays the experience of violent murder, and does so with striking artistry. The show is visually stunning, features a beautiful score, and elevates even the most gruesome acts into a form of art.
Watching this show is strangely compelling, even though it’s unsettling and can make you feel sick. A big part of what makes it so captivating is Mads Mikkelsen’s brilliant portrayal of Hannibal Lecter, especially his complex and disturbing relationship with Will Graham, played by Hugh Dancy.
Interestingly, Hannibal sometimes uses dark humor, which perfectly complements Mads Mikkelsen’s dry and witty performance. This mix of tones is a big reason why the show has become so popular with viewers worldwide. Plus, its unique, visually striking style—drawing from Gothic and surrealist art—also appeals to fans of classic cinema.
While the 1991 film The Silence of the Lambs skillfully combines psychological suspense with realistic police work when portraying Hannibal Lecter, the NBC series Hannibal fully embraces the character’s insanity. And remarkably, the show draws the viewer into that world as well.
Hannibal Deserves At Least One More Season
Despite ending its run on NBC over a decade ago, Hannibal is experiencing a surge in popularity. Recently added to HBO Max in several European countries, the show has quickly climbed into the top 10 most-streamed shows on the platform in multiple regions.
The website FlixPatrol shows that the series Hannibal was a top show in Denmark for two days this week and has remained in the top 10 in Finland for much of April. Additionally, HBO Max data shows it was the sixth most-watched series in Italy on April 22nd. It’s evident that Hannibal continues to gain popularity in new regions as it’s released.
Despite ending years ago, fans of the show Hannibal are still hoping for a fourth season. Production has been stalled because Amazon MGM Studios owns the rights to the story, having acquired Orion Pictures – the original distributor of The Silence of the Lambs – in 2022.
A fourth season of Hannibal would essentially be a television adaptation of the iconic film directed by Jonathan Demme. Bryan Fuller, the show’s creator, is eager to make it happen and has already secured the participation of Mads Mikkelsen and other actors. The main hurdle now is obtaining the rights to the story from Amazon.
