The MCU’s New Villain Continues A 5-Year Multiverse Saga Streak

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is repeating a tricky pattern with its villains in its latest movie, which is becoming a problem for the overall Multiverse Saga. Most fans agree the MCU was at its peak during the ‘Infinity Saga,’ but the ‘Multiverse Saga’ has faced a lot of criticism, partly because of the TV shows released on Disney+.

This resulted in Marvel Studios rushing out a lot of projects in a short period, which didn’t allow enough time for careful development. Consequently, some films and shows didn’t reach the high quality Marvel is known for. A disappointing result was that several potentially great villains weren’t fully developed or utilized.

The Multiverse Saga has introduced a number of villains, but many haven’t lived up to their potential. Characters like Gorr the God Butcher, Taskmaster, MODOK, and Kang the Conqueror seemed promising at first, but ultimately fell short. Whether through comedic portrayal, being overshadowed by other characters like Doctor Doom, failing to fulfill their core concept, or simply being weaker versions of their comic book counterparts, these villains weren’t utilized to their full extent in the MCU.

The new Marvel series, Daredevil: Born Again, seems to be facing similar challenges as other recent shows. Despite strong performances from Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin and Wilson Bethel as Bullseye, the series is struggling to make its newest villain, Mr. Charles, a compelling threat. While Mr. Charles has potential, the show hasn’t yet given viewers a reason to be invested in his story.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Is Wasting Its New Villain So Far

Be warned, this article reveals major plot points from Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 6. Actor Matthew Lillard recently joined the cast as the character Mr. Charles, which was exciting news for Marvel fans. Lillard is known for his compelling performances in popular series and films like Scream, Scooby-Doo, and Five Nights at Freddy’s, making him a great fit for a dynamic villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Initially, that’s exactly what seemed to be happening.

Initially, the introduction of Mr. Charles seemed promising. His first scene, confidently taking charge at the mayor’s office, suggested he’d be a powerful player in the series, especially as a mysterious government operative rather than a typical villain. However, after episode 6 of Daredevil: Born Again season 2, his role feels largely unnecessary.

Kingpin initially felt uneasy with Mr. Charles’ influence, but now largely ignores him. After Buck swiftly defeated his followers, Lillard’s character hasn’t had a chance to prove himself in the MCU. While Mr. Charles is an enjoyable addition, his role doesn’t significantly affect the overall plot, which is disappointing considering Lillard’s strong first appearance.

There Is Still Time To Turn Mr. Charles’ MCU Story Around

With two episodes remaining in Daredevil: Born Again season 2, there’s still a chance for the show to improve and make the character of Mr. Charles a significant part of the story. Episode 6 hinted that Luke Cage is connected to Mr. Charles, which could give the villain a chance to really shine.

If Kevin Feige brings Luke Cage back with actor Mike Colter, it suggests the character will have played an important role in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. This would also show that Feige has been planning something bigger all along, hinted at in his first MCU appearance but not explored until now. Hopefully, the second season of Daredevil: Born Again will improve things and avoid repeating the underwhelming villain storylines of the Multiverse Saga.
