may have just broken an A24 record.
Originally a popular video game created by FromSoftware and Hidetaka Miyazaki, Elden Ring is based on the rich mythology and world George R. R. Martin—the creator of Game of Thrones—developed. Now, filmmaker Alex Garland will adapt the 2022 game for A24, and the project has recently received some exciting news.
According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, production on the Elden Ring movie has begun in the UK. The A24 film is expected to cost over $100 million to make, making it the company’s most expensive project yet – considerably more than the $70 million budget for Marty Supreme (scheduled for release in 2025). Filming will likely take around 100 days.
The latest report on the film includes an updated list of actors, many of whom have worked with the director before. Already announced cast members are Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw, and Kit Connor. Joining them now are Nick Offerman, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Emma Laird, Ruby Cruz, John Hodgkinson, Peter Serafinowicz, and Jefferson Hall.
I’m really excited for the Elden Ring movie coming out in March 2028, though I know we’ll be waiting a while for a trailer! It sounds like A24 has a lot of faith in what director Garland is planning. He’s clearly someone they trust – his last film, Civil War, was their most expensive project yet, costing around $50 million. It’s good to know they’re willing to invest in his creative vision for this adaptation too.
The estimated budget for Elden Ring reflects A24’s overall expansion. The company has grown significantly beyond its origins as a small distributor and production house focused on independent films, and these larger investments seem to be proving successful.
Both Civil War and Marty Supreme were financially successful, earning $127 million and over $180 million worldwide, respectively. If Elden Ring costs $100 million to produce, it will need to significantly outperform all previous A24 films at the box office. Following typical Hollywood calculations, the movie likely needs to earn around $250 million to break even and become profitable.
A24 is creating a film based on the incredibly popular video game Elden Ring. The game, which has sold over 30 million copies and won more than 400 ‘Game of the Year’ awards – making it one of the most highly praised games ever – tells the story of a hero trying to repair the Elden Ring and bring harmony to a troubled land.
Although many details about the Elden Ring adaptation are still unknown, A24 is definitely supporting Garland with everything he needs to create a game with a grand story and expansive world. We’ll have to wait to see Garland’s full vision, but this is shaping up to be a video game adaptation worth anticipating.
