On July 28th, Coinbase named Rob Witoff as its new Chief Technology Officer. Witoff was one of the company’s first engineers, and his appointment comes as Coinbase focuses more on developing products using artificial intelligence.
Summary
- Coinbase appointed longtime engineer Rob Witoff as chief technology officer, confirming the leadership change Tuesday.
- Witoff first joined Coinbase in 2014, returning as platform head in December 2024 after entrepreneurship.
- Coinbase cut approximately 14% of employees in May while rebuilding teams around AI-assisted workflows companywide.
Coinbase’s official leadership page now lists Witoff as CTO.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong revealed the appointment on X, praising Witoff for making Coinbase a leader in using artificial intelligence. However, Armstrong’s claim about Coinbase being ‘one of the most AI-enabled companies’ is his opinion, not a result from an outside evaluation.
Rob Witoff returns to a role shaped by Coinbase’s early years
Jesse Witoff started at Coinbase in 2014, where he spent three years leading their security and infrastructure teams. He eventually became their chief architect and played a key role in developing the exchange’s original systems. Later, he created Unit 410, a company specializing in secure cryptocurrency storage for institutions, which Coinbase then purchased.
Rob has been instrumental in Coinbase’s growth and achievements, especially in making us a leader in using artificial intelligence. We’re thrilled he’s becoming our Chief Technology Officer.

My interest in Bitcoin started way back in 2009. I remember when Coinbase first launched – it only supported one cryptocurrency at the time! We were a small engineering team, working with a single codebase. This background gives some historical perspective as I join the company, though not every technical detail from a recent post on July 27th has been independently verified by Coinbase.
Coinbase rehired him in December 2024 to lead its platform and join the company’s executive leadership. He explained that when he started this role, the main goal was to make Coinbase the top choice for developers and builders, and that goal continues to guide the company’s direction.
Coinbase CTO appointment comes during an AI overhaul
This promotion is part of a larger shift in how Coinbase builds software and structures its teams. Back in May, the company announced it would reduce its staff by approximately 14% – around 700 positions – to simplify management and create smaller teams focused on using artificial intelligence.
According to Armstrong, AI is dramatically speeding up the development process at Coinbase, letting engineers finish tasks in days that used to take weeks. They’re also testing small teams of individuals handling engineering, product development, and design all at once. This setup represents how Coinbase envisions working in the future, but it’s still too early to know exactly how it will impact overall productivity, expenses, or employee workloads.
Coinbase reported that almost all of its new code is now created using AI, but it’s still checked by humans. According to their engineering report, AI-generated code went from representing 5.7% of all new code in early 2025 to nearly 100% by mid-2026, all while still being reviewed by people to ensure it meets standards and regulations.
Witoff inherits reliability and security responsibilities
Coinbase’s Chief Technology Officer will lead the company’s technological development as it introduces new products like futures trading, stablecoin payments, prediction markets, and services designed for AI. With each of these additions, strong underlying infrastructure, robust security, and quick problem-solving become even more critical.
On July 14th, Coinbase had a service outage lasting about 50 minutes. A standard system update caused problems with a key part of their infrastructure, temporarily stopping transfers, credit card payments, and some blockchain services. Coinbase confirmed that users’ funds were safe and stated they’ve since implemented better safety measures and recovery plans to prevent similar issues in the future.
Having worked in security, system design, and platform development, Witoff brings relevant expertise to his role. However, Coinbase hasn’t announced any new goals, funding plans, or a specific tech strategy connected with his hiring.
Leadership changes continue across Coinbase
This new Chief Technology Officer appointment comes after a change in leadership. Paul Grewal, Coinbase’s Chief Legal Officer, announced on July 8th that he would be stepping down on July 31st. Molly Abraham will take over as general counsel and corporate secretary, and Mr. Grewal will continue to advise the company through October.
As crypto.news reported earlier, Coinbase recently reorganized its business to prioritize development using artificial intelligence. Following that, crypto.news detailed Coinbase’s release of tools that let approved AI programs trade cryptocurrency, send payments, and manage finances.
Coinbase is regularly evaluating how it interviews engineers specializing in artificial intelligence, as well as checking in on new employees after 45 and 90 days on the job. Now, the challenge for Coinbase will be to continue launching products rapidly without sacrificing security, dependability, or compliance with regulations.
