Over the past few decades, Tom Hanks has become one of Hollywood’s most successful and respected actors thanks to his consistent ability to create popular and critically acclaimed films – some even winning Oscars. From beloved franchises like Toy Story to romantic comedies like Sleepless in Seattle, intense war dramas like Saving Private Ryan, and gripping thrillers like Captain Phillips, Hanks has built an impressive and diverse film career.

Jason Voorhees, with his iconic hockey mask and habit of terrorizing teenagers, quickly became a pop culture icon in the 1980s. He’s considered one of the most famous slasher villains of all time, alongside names like Freddy Krueger and Michael Myers. Though he hasn’t appeared in a movie for almost twenty years, a return to the big screen is always a possibility.

The filmmakers chose to move forward with a Supergirl movie, drawing heavily from the recent comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. This means the early films in the new DC Universe will feature a lot of Kryptonian characters. However, Superman was successful and well-received, and the new trailer for Supergirl confirms that David Corenswet’s Superman will have at least a cameo. It’s likely his role will be limited to what’s shown in the trailer, though it wouldn’t be surprising to see him reappear briefly at the end, similar to how Supergirl appeared at the end of Superman, hinting at Corenswet’s return in Man of Tomorrow next year.

The new series Supergirl stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl. She’s joined by Eve Ridley (known from 3 Body Problem and The Witcher) as her friend Ruthye Marye Knoll, Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone, The Old Guard 2) as the villain Krem, and David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer, The Studio) as Supergirl’s father, Zor-El. Emily Beecham (King & Conqueror) plays Supergirl’s mother, Alura In-Ze, and Krypto the Superdog also appears. The show aims to establish Supergirl as a unique hero, separate from Superman, and show audiences that she’s more than just a female version of him.

Created by the team behind Z Nation, Black Summer is a gritty, two-season spinoff that takes place three years before the events of that show, right at the beginning of a zombie outbreak. The series follows a small group of people who band together to survive the fast-moving chaos while searching for family and a secure location. Black Summer arrived when many zombie fans were feeling burnt out by The Walking Dead, and its second season earned a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, proving it was a welcome change.

Inspired by the retro-futuristic art of Simon Stålenhag, the Prime Video series Tales From the Loop is a truly impressive show. It feels more mature and thoughtful than Stranger Things, making the latter seem simplistic in comparison. Though the eight episodes initially appear unconnected, they cleverly come together in a rewarding finale. Tales From the Loop explores big, universal ideas that Stranger Things generally avoids.
