The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announced its 2026 inductees, and the selections were strong. Long-awaited inclusions were Oasis and Iron Maiden. New Edition, despite winning the fan vote, wasn’t selected, which makes sense – they’re a talented and popular group, but don’t really fit the rock and roll genre.
Despite some progress, many deserving musicians are still missing from the Hall of Fame. It’s possible the selection committee is now acknowledging past oversights and starting to correct them, as evidenced by Oasis’s recent induction. The artists listed below are equally worthy of recognition.
There are still many deserving artists who haven’t been inducted yet, beyond those already mentioned. Bands like Motörhead and the Black Crowes definitely deserve consideration.
Four musical artists that are being left out in the cold by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
Thin Lizzy
Try this: ask your Alexa device to play Thin Lizzy, then see if you can stop it! Their music is fantastic—much more than just their famous song, “The Boys Are Back in Town.” While that song might get a bit tiresome from being played so often, exploring their full collection will help you rediscover why it’s such a classic.
The band only received one nomination for the Hall of Fame (in 2020) and probably won’t be inducted. Their popularity may have declined too quickly, but their decade of success certainly deserves consideration.
Sting
Sting’s recent induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame feels similar to what happened with Phil Collins last year. It’s surprising Collins wasn’t inducted sooner, considering his band Genesis was, and so was his former bandmate Peter Gabriel. The Police, Sting’s band, were inducted back in 2013.
Interestingly, Sting has had a much longer career as a solo artist than he did with The Police. While he’s known for many hit songs, he’s also consistently pushed his creative boundaries and demanded the same from his collaborators. Some might say he experimented a bit too much with jazz, but consistent quality is admirable, and it’s surprising he’s only received one Grammy nomination (in 2015).
John Prine
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducts artists in several categories, including Musical Excellence. While John Prine deserves recognition as a performer, that seems unlikely. He has a better chance of being inducted through the Musical Excellence category.
He’s a remarkably talented songwriter who doesn’t always get the recognition he deserves, with many of his best songs being hits for other artists. Despite a strong body of work, he was only nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame once, in 2019, and deserves more consideration.
The Smiths
The Smiths, a hugely popular band from the 1980s, has been up for induction into the Hall of Fame twice – in 2015 and 2016 – but hasn’t made it in yet. It’s possible that the controversial opinions and outspoken nature of lead singer Morrissey are impacting their chances. Morrissey himself has publicly expressed dislike for the Hall of Fame.
Look, The Smiths made some seriously amazing music – their songs and albums still hold up today. And you can hear their impact on bands like Oasis, it’s super clear. Honestly, they deserve a spot in the Hall of Fame, whether Morrissey approves or not. They were just that good – a true musical force.
