Star Wars fans are asking LucasFilm for answers after the planned movie featuring Rey Skywalker (Daisy Ridley), titled Star Wars: New Jedi Order, was cancelled. They want to know what the movie was about and why it was scrapped.
It’s notoriously difficult to get information from LucasFilm about the changes made to their scripts, but screenwriter Damon Lindelof (known for Lost) has now shared his perspective on what went wrong with a particular project. He’s also revealed what the original script actually looked like, giving fans the answers they’ve been hoping for.
It’s ironic that the idea which initially landed Lindelof the lead creative role on Star Wars: New Jedi Order was ultimately the reason he lost the job. After leaving LucasFilm in 2023, Lindelof is now sharing what happened.
New Jedi Order Was ‘the Protestant Reformation Inside Star Wars’
Lindelof recently shared that he was fired from a Star Wars movie after initially being hired based on his vision for the film. He explained to The Ringer-Verse that he was asked what he thought a Star Wars movie should be, he gave his answer, and they hired him. However, two years later, he was let go, suggesting his initial ideas didn’t work out as planned.
We – my collaborators Justin Britt-Gibson and Rayna McClendon and I – were trying to explore a conflict in the movie between the pull of nostalgia and the desire to reinterpret things. We essentially wanted to create a story mirroring the Protestant Reformation within the Star Wars universe, but unfortunately, it didn’t come together as we’d hoped.
Ultimately, Lindelof believes the studio played it too safe, and he understands why fans are disappointed.
He continued, “You can’t have your cake and eat it too.” He felt the fan discussion was happening genuinely, without any self-aware acknowledgement of the audience, and didn’t seem particularly daring.
Damon Lindelof is doing well professionally, but many feel frustrated that his two years of work on the Star Wars: New Jedi Order project ultimately went nowhere. He’s currently finishing up James Gunn’s Lanterns series for HBO Max, which also contributes to the reasons he was removed from the Star Wars project.
Star Wars: New Jedi Order Was a ‘Tanker’ for Damon Lindelof
LucasFilm rejected Lindelof’s movie idea, and the project was also dragging on for so long that he struggled to accept the situation.
He explained that his dismissal wasn’t due to the initial idea, which they liked, but rather the difficulty of the writing process. It was a slow process, especially finding the right tone and figuring out how the project fit within the existing Star Wars story, particularly its connection to Episode IX and whether it would launch a new trilogy. He compared it to steering a massive tanker – making a change in direction takes a long time to register. Essentially, they were trying to pinpoint the core essence of Star Wars.
He announced that the new Star Wars: New Jedi Order stories would follow Rey, Finn, and Poe, continuing their adventures. However, this didn’t quite fit with the simultaneous rise in popularity of The Mandalorian and Grogu.
When The Force Awakens was released, it was clear the film was introducing a new generation of heroes – Rey, Finn, and Poe – alongside the return of classic characters like Luke, Leia, Han, and Chewbacca. The impression was that after this new trilogy concluded, these new characters would become the central focus of the Star Wars saga.
It definitely appears to be heading that way, but not all Star Wars fans agree. Many still want the Star Wars: New Jedi Order storyline to be reconsidered, feeling that the characters Rey, Finn, and Poe deserve a better story.
